IN NEW BERN TODAY
We are sure that the two most
excited students at New Bern High
school today are Janeth Hill and
Jimmie Leathers. Tonight (Fri
day) they will be making their first
appearances as soloists in the Yule
tide Revue Kay Phillips is anoth-
ai' soloist in the 24th edition of
America’s oldest Christmas charity
.show, but she has sung in the Re
vue before.
Singing in the Yuletide Revue is
nothing new for the New Bern
High school a capella choir. It has
happened for years—long before
l)resent members of the choir were
born. They’re excited too, and so
i.s the high school band, another
feature of the show.
We have been quite proud of our
choir and the boys and girls glee

clubs during the holiday season.
They contributed much to the St.
Cecelia Music Club’s program at
the Tabernacle Baptist church, and
their Christmas concert last Friday
night was wonderful.
We are also quite proud of our
basketball team. It ha.s already giv
en us some wonderful thrills in its
early games, and we are expecting
even more thrills when the season
continues after the Christmas holt
days.
This is our last Teen Topics col
umn before Christmas, and we
w'ant to wish each of you the hap
piest Yuletide ever. We are busy
addressing our cards and wrapping
our gifts, and we know that if we
get it done before the last minute
there will be more time to enjoy
with friends.
Also, we’ve promised ourselves
to do more around the house dur
ing this Christmas vacation. Your
mother will be very busy, and she
will appreciate any help you can
give her.
If you’re going to be driving a
car during the holidays, please be
very careful. That way you not
only can have a merry Christmas
but a happy New Year too.

MEDITATION
Mankind has explored the far
corners of our universe. He has
conquered its material resources
and exploited its tremendous possi
bilities. Our world seems to have
reached the ultimate of material
ism, of conveniences and luxury
living.
Man would still be living in
caves if it were not for the forces
of discontent, curiosity and imag
ination. We have progressed rapid
ly and wonderfully in our material
era.
What lies ahead tor mankind is
his most daring challenge. For he
stands now at the dawn of a great
mental age. He feels the tug of

YULETIDE OR AUTUMN?—-Christmas is only a short week
away, but Margaret Allen has trouble believing it as she
finds a warm spot to bask in the late December sun. This
could be the last straw before New Bern is lashed by winter
blasts. Until then, like Margaret, weTl be enjoying pleas
ant weather while we can,—Photo by Billy Benners.
eternal creation as he stands at
the edge of mystery in the area of
thought.
The Supreme Intelligence has
guided man’s advance well, and
has properly timed this period for
the human mind to come of age.
This generation and those to fol
low will produce many advances
beyond the wildest dreams of man
kind. God is now ready to express
himself through the mind of man.
For hidden within the depths of
man’s mind, lie dormant the
thoughts that will eventually
abridge his understanding from
the material to the spiritual.
Can you imagine a world in
which man has advanced in knowl
edge and understanding to a level
where all major differences are re
duced to historical insignificance
and regret. And that his advance
of soul and spirit has elevated him
to a oneness with Almighty God.
If mankind does not seize the op
portunity that stands daring him
to explore the spiritual, the ad
vance of materialism could very
well take another course and sub
merge those that remain, to the
depths of stone age existence.
Will man have a choice? Or will
God force the advances of truth
upon the human mind through the
eternal progress of creative laws?
I wonder.

Artists —
(Continued from page one)
tion; best portrait; best serigraph;
best enamel; best printed on tex
tile or woven material. It wiU, to
say the least, be a comprehensive
display of fine artistry, and the
fact that three New Bernians will
be privileged to have entries at'
Washington, plus the work of an
other member of the'New Bern
branch, is a great compliment to
the artists in this area.
Admittedly, talent is a God-given
asset, but if it isn’t cultivated or
remains ignored, it isn’t apt to
blossom into accomplishment.
These New Bern artists, largely
through their own initiative, have
brought recognition and credit to
the entire community.
What they have done is a chal
lenge to all of us, and might well
bring about a general awakening
and an increased interest in art
here.
