Page Eight THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, May 20, 1960 Teen IN NEW BERN TODAY , Our heartiest congratulations to Bonnie Fitterman, whose election as lieutenant-governor of North Carolina Junior Civitan Internation al at last Saturday’s State conven tion here brought a great honor to her, to our High school and to New Bern. Bonnie is not only a very sweet girl but a very capable one. That wonderful personality of hers real ty captivated visiting Junior Civi tans. She succeeds another one of our fine students, Marshall Ball, as lieutenant governor. To have such a distinction come to New Bern •High school twice in the two years that we have had a Junior Civitan club is quite a feat. It is true that many of our lo cal teen-agers don’t spell as well as they should. In view of the im portance of spelling, perhaps it .should be emphasized more than it is after we leave Junior High. You will be interested to know that the Charlotte Observer holds a State spelling bee each year. The 1960 bee was held on April 22nd. We don’t know all of the details, but it might be worthwhile to in vestigate. We could have a champi on for New Bern High school, and he or she might win the spelling crown. A lot of us have small brothers and sisters in our home, and here’s some good advice. Help your par ents to keep dangerous drugs and pesticides out of the reach of these little ones. ^ral teen-agers particularly should see to it that the entire fam ily is careful about pesticides. Sheds should never be left unlock ed, and no pesticide should ever be transferred to a soft drink bot tle or an unlabeled container. There are so many different pes ticides on the market that no one can possible remember the direc tion for each of them. The risk to a farmer and his family not only depends upon the strength of the chemical, but how it is handled and how often we are exposed to it. Williams' 66 Ser. " As always when a gridiron men tor has been plagued by losses, many fans will shed no tears over his departure. The axe is bound to come to any coach who doesn’t win regularly against keen rivals, and Sam’s strongest supporters are forc ed to admit that victories occurred less than often. For our part, we like this fellow Arbes. He may not have measured up as a coach here, which wasn’t entirely his fault, but as a man we found him to be sincere and con- scientous. With a little more luck, and a little more cooperation, it might have been a different story. 9. One of his big mistakes is part and parcel of his personality. A hail fellow well met, he fell into the error of being a buddy to the boys who played for him. Even on the college level, you can’t afford to get familiar with your team. In high school sports such an approach can lead to noth ing but heartaches and disaster. It’s hard for a coach like Sam to stay aloof, but failure to do so de stroys discipline. Unless an adult demands respect from a teen-ager, or a young child for that matter, he’ll never get it. Added to this was Sam’s charact eristic of talking about his team’s problems to outsiders. Some were trusted friends, others were friends of the fair weather variety, and still others were just casual acquaint ances who occasionally knifed him in the back. If nothing else, Arbes was the best handler of the financial aspect of high school sports to ever put in an appearance here. And unlike his predecessor, he didn’t get a po lice record while serving as New Bern High school coach. Whatever his faults and failings, we wish him only the best. READ fHE MIRROR WEEKLY J. W.
