THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C.
Page Three
“The statutes of the Lord are
right, rejoicing the heart; the com
mandment of the Lord is pure, en
lightening the eyes.” — Psalms
19:8.
Crocus need all the sun and es
pecially like sand. Snowdrops need
a rich soil, and do well under trees
that lose their foliage during winter.
It is a little bulb that is easy to
keep. It requires no care.

bloom early and look real pretty in
the rock garden. Winter aconite is
one of the earliest to bloom. It is
very inexpensive, and a little patch
of them peeping through the snow
is very pretty.
It is not necessary to put fertilizer
around shrubs when you plant them
in the fall. Don’t rush them, for
they are too easily killed by hard
weather. Oriental poppies may still
be planted. Soak the earth around
them before lifting. The tap root
must be dug up in order for it to
live.
Do not throw away tops of an
nuals and other plants. They are
good material for the compost pile.
Keep the compost pile wet. Spray
iris with DDT. Any good borer
preventive will do.
Add apple and wheat seeds for
the birds. They enjoy this with the
white striped sunflower seed. Feed
the birds to keep them from going
south. They might find this is a good
place for our fine feathered friends.
Keep plenty of water for them.
Pachysandra is fine for a ground
cover in the shade. Along with rocks
and a few blooms, it can make a
perfect rock garden. Plantain lilies

Put English daisies out when you

And now, here is this week’s Buds
and Blossoms poem. It it titled
“Where Go The Boats?” and was
written by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Dark brown is the river,
Grolden is the sand.
It flows along forever.
With trees on either hand.
Green leaves'aTfloating,
'Castles of the foam, -
Boats of naine a-boating —
Where will all come home.
On goes the river.;
And out past the mill.
Away down the valley.
Away down the hill.
Away down the river
A hundred miles or more.
Other little children.
Shall bring my boats ashore.

Teach your- child to face an ill
ness. Sm^l children must learn that
there are unfortunate things in life
which happen to all of us, and
which we must learn to face.-
Illnesses are among the first un
pleasant experiences with which
children come in contact. The wise
parent will see that his child learns
something from this. The unwise one
will hang over the child, pamper,
and baby him.
Be truthful. Never fool your child
about his illness, about pain, or
in regard to food and medicine. If
you tell him the medicine is not so
bad, and he finds it is horrible to
taste, he may lose some faith in
you.
It is far better to tell him the
medicine isn’t pleasant, but he’s get
ting to be a big boy now and you
think that he can take it. He’ll take
pride in his accomplishment.
Make directions streamlined. In
structions should be simple, in as
few words as possible. Be sure that
they are necessary. Once given, see
that they are obeyed. Be sure, for
example, that Junior needs to stay
in bed, and then insist that he stays
there. We are inclined to give chil
dren too many or too rigid orders,
and then allow too much leeway in
their interpretation of those orders.
Give credit where credit is due.
It is far better to give credit to
Junior for the good things he does
than to stress the bad ones, when
it comes to getting results. Have you
heard a mother explain within Jim
mie’s range of hearing that he is
sick and so hard to take care of, and
won’t do this and won’t do that?
She is just giving him ideas.
Extra attention necessary during
illness should be quickly eliminated
as soon as your child is safely past
the real need for it. Don’t make be
ing ill too much of a happy holiday.
Later on memories of delightful days
in bed may lead to fake illnesses
when the going gets difficult.
