She had a sister, Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and stayed there listening to his words. Now Martha was distracted by her many tasks, so she came to him and said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to get on with the work by WE BUY WRECKED AUTOS MODELS 1955 AND UP Wh*n You Think of Used Auto Part* — Think of lit. It is the maturity of our lives. Ella Wheeler Wilcox tells us about it this week in our Buds and Blossoms poem. TIRED I am tired tonight, and something— The wind maybe, or the rain. Or the cry of the bird in the copse outside-— Has brought back the past and its pain. And it’s murdering thousands in the South. “It” is the southern pine beetle, it’s ravaging the forests of Meck lenburg, Union and Davidson coun ties already. “The big thing in event of attack is to salvage trees as fast as pos sible,” says Fred Whitfield, ex tension forester at N. C. State col lege. “And insecticides can’t solve all the trouble.” Whitfield urges pine-owners to take these steps when they find bark beetles infesting their trees: 1. Remove dead and dying trees immediately. This helps control spread of the beetle and keep down damage from other wood boring insects. 2. Use the infested trees prompt ly. Pulp mills taking beetle-bitten trees should be notified at once. 3. Spray insecticide on tops, stumps or trees too small to be And I feel, as I sit here thinking, 'That the hand of the dead old June Has reached hold of my heart’s loose strings And is drawing them up in tune. I am tired tonight, and I miss you And long for your love through tears; And it seems but today that I saw you go—r You who have been gone for years; And I seem to be newly lonely, I who am so much alone. And the strings of my heart are well in tune. But they have not the same old tone. I am tired, and that old sorrow Sweeps down the bed of my soul. As a turbulent river might suddenly break Away from a dam’s control. It beareth a wreck on its bosom, A wreck with a snow-white sail. And the hand on my heart strings thrums away. But they only respond with a wail. Wor th* best In wheel balancing, wheal alignment, meter tuna-up, brake, generater, starter repairs, Harvey Moers. Ballard's Service Station Bridgeten, N. C. Benzene hexachloride (BHC) is an effective chemical — one gallon to 55 gallons of No. 2 fuel oil. Don’t forget the rubber gloves when mixing or spraying, since BHC is toxic to humans. 'The dark beetles attack the middle and upper parts of green trees. You may have to use binocu lars to find them. “Outward sign of attack is a light-to-reddish-brown color in the tops of the trees,” says Dr. M. H. Farrier, State college entomologist working on the problem with Whit field. “A closer look will show reddish dust in the bark crevices.” When the beetles tunnel into the inner bark, resin forms, mixes with the bark dust and is pushed outside by the beetles. It hardens and forms pitch tubes. Other kinds bf bark beetles, attacking at the same time, cause pitch tubes to form from ground to treetop. “Sixty-five thousand beetles can destroy 65 14-inch pine trees,” says Whitfield. “The beetles can take out dozens of acres in one stand during one season.” In Georgia, 90,000 acres of pines have been destroyed. Much damage has been done in South Carolina, too.
