As Seen in The Mirror's SPORTS cv\ow^ of Athletes and Events New Bern's Donald Davis ex perienced his first real college thrill last Friday at Winston- Salem. Although the Baby Dea cons of Wake Forest lost 34- 7 to the South Carolina Frosh, Donald raced 26 yards for a fourth quarter touchdown. Just as he did at New Bern High, the youngster made good use of his Interference. All things considered, the charges of Coach Bill Klutz came up with a creditable game at Elizabeth City last Friday night. The Bruins made a fight of It after yielding a pair of early touchdowns to the Yellow Jackets, managed to tally themselves and ended up on the short end of a respectable 13-7 score. Tonight the Bears are taking another long trip for a North eastern Conference clash with a Tarboro eleven that has been decidedly unimpressive this sea son. New Bern, It would appear. stands an excellent chance to emerge victorious, despite the fact that the Tars are primed for this one. Speaking of Tarboro, we re cently had the pleasure oi chat ting about High school football of the Thirties with Ducky Lewis who is now executive secretary of the North Carolina Motel As sociation. Lewis in his day was a brilliant ball carrier for the Tarboro team, and made things miserable for a fine New Bern team whenever the two clubs met. “1 always hated to play a- gainst New Bern,” Ducky ad mitted the other night. “That big tackle you had-Clifton Daugherty-k^t busting through the line. When he tackled me, he would pick me up and throw me down like a little girl who gets mad with her doll.” Daugherty was 190 pounds of muscle, and later starred for Page Seven Top Ten Tunes In New Bern This Week L.
