Friday, January 4, 1963 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Page Seven Buds AND Blossoms By MAMIE MILLER "And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season- his leaf also shall not wither- and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly which the wind drivethaway."-- Psalm 1: 3-4. The New Year is filled with new plants to grow. The new seed catalogues will be coming in with all the new colors and varieties of new plants. Mail the names of flower lovers who are forced to remain indoors be cause of health to these firms. They’ll enjoy reading about plants, even though they can’t grow them now. It’s good ad vertising as they have the time to tell what they read to other growers. Solidago is Primrose Cas cade, a superb new perennial that produces from three to six rigid spikes about 18 or 20 inches high, topped with two dozen or more cascading, plume, -like flower bracts. These come in the new primrose yellow. If you like an unusual tree, plant the Paw Paw tree--known as the Michigan banana tree. The tree is handsome. You may eat the fruit, and it is easily grown anywhere. Nor signs of gabled foreign towns In distant countries fair. But I can glimpse, beyond my pane, A green and friendly hill. And red geraniums aflame Upon my window sill. The brambled cares of everyday. The tiny humdrum things. May bind my feet when they would stray. But still my heart has wings While red geraniums are bloomed Against my window glass. And low above my green-sweet hill The gypsy wind-clouds pass. And if my dreamings ne’er come true. The brightest and the best. But leave me lone my journey through. I’ll set my heart at rest. And thank God for home-sweet things, A green and friendly hill. And red geraniums aflame Upon my window sill. When the New Bern High school quint played Campbell College freshmen before the Christmas holidays, Jackson - vllle Coach Tom Pritchard was an interested spectator. We sat with Tom, an old fri end from Coastal Plain League days, and chatted about pro spects for a tough Northeastern campaign. Bruin Coach Bob Lewis indicated several weeks ago that he figures Pritchard’s classy Cardinals are the team to beat in the loop. As for Tom, he has great respect for the Bears but Is honest enough to admit that he doesn't consider them invin cible. "I think we can give them a good ball game,’’ he told us during the course of the Camp bell contest. At the moment, the locals weren’t doing too well off the backboard. Like Lewis, the Jacksonville coach expects plenty of trouble from Roanoke Rapids and Green ville, and doesn’t discount the possibility that Tarboro and Kin ston may throttle his club. “We’ll be facing some fine vet erans," he reasons, "andthey’ll be hard to handle.” On the professional scene, New Bern’s great Negro basket- bailer -- Walt Bellamy -- has reached the heights early.
