VOLUME 5
NEW BERN, N. C., FRIDAY, JANUARY 25, 1963
NUMBER 37
One of our good friends, Car
ter Willis, is tremendously
proud of the dog given her
eight years ago by Dr. George
Bullock, a local veterinarian.
She named the nondescript
canine Sheba--the same handle
assigned to two dogs she had
owned earlier.
All three of the pets, as the
name implies, have been lady
dogs, just like the four-legged
star of “Come Back, Little
Sheba.’’ There was another star
in the movie too, Shirley Booth,
who won the Academy Award for
her magnificient performance.
It was her first screen role,
after notable success on Broad
way.
Since then, Shirley has
achieved even wider fame as
television’s beloved Hazel, but
she’ll never forget a little fuzzy
dog that helped her to earn an
Oscar in Hollywood.
Shirley couldn’t possibly feel
any more affection for the origi
nal Sheba than Carter Willis
feels for her present pet. Living
a dog’s life at the Willis home
isn’t half bad. Sheba has her
own special bed, and is treated
like a queen.
To be completely honest,
Sheba doesn’t know many tricks.
What’s the point in learning a
lot of tricks when you get every
thing your heart desires, includ
ing ice cream cones? Let’s
face it, Sheba has been spoiled
by an admiring owner who is
convinced her pooch can do no
wrong.
Tricks or no tricks, the dog
is smart. She demonstrated her
sagacity on one occasion while
chasing a cat. A speeding auto
mobile came out of nowhere as
Sheba charged across the street,
and she didn’t appear to have
a chance to escape it.
Believe it or not, the Willis
canine put on brakes with all
four feet and skidded to a stop
in the nick of time. She re
mained delightfully alive to
continue her periodic pursuing
of cats, and to bring im
measurable Joy to Carter.
Here's hoping the supply of
cats will never be exhausted,
and that Sheba will be around
for many more years to bring
loads of happiness to her adoring
proprietor.
Last Saturday, whejihundreds
of 'I'ar HeeL^ journeyed to out
town to attend a public hearing
held by tlie Outer ISanks
Seashore Commission, we felt
quire proud of our Craven County
Courthouse. It.*; courtroom,
clean and attractive, is far

GOOD SPORTS—New Bern High school teachers (men
and women) went all out last Friday night to help make
the Student-Faculty basketball games a laugh riot and a
financial success. Proceeds gave a big boost to the
school paper — The Bear Cub. Billy Pierce, Jr., an ex
cellent teenage photographer, caught Math Teacher
Patsy Finch (with bubble gum clearly visible) howling
insults at the referee at top right. English Teacher
Sarah Green (faculty water boy) gleefully leads an
impromptu parade, top left. Below, Physical Ed Teacher
Frances Grady is carried from the court while a side
line benefactor reaches for the oxygen tank.
has helped tremendously, not to
mention an excellent photostat
department in the Regi.ster of
Deeds office.
In the office of the Clerk of
the Court--down in the base
ment-- you'll find a veritable
irea-iire house of ancient docu
ments, adequately filed and in
dexed It is one of the most
valuable collections in North
Carolina and .\merica, and noted
historians have said as much.
Take a tour of the County
Courthouse, from top to bot
tom, Then vou’ll understand whv
we are so enthusiastic about
its thorough renovation a few
years ago. You’ll agree that in
this instance the public’s money
was well spent.
Nobody down at the Court
house asked for this praise
from The Mirror, but we’reglad
to commend its occupants for
appreciating the improved sur
roundings and taking good care
of them. As a newspaperman,
we’re sold on the courtesy, co
operation and efficiency of the
County employees we deal with.
