Easier to Keep Freezer Odors Out
Than to Eliminate Them, Orr Says
Have you been having trouble
with odors in your home
freezer? If so, you have pro
bably found out that they are
hard to get rid of.
Miss Nita Orr, frozen food
specialist for the N. C. Agri
cultural Extension Service, says
you can keep odors out far easier
than you can get them out,
“Freezers should have no
odor,” says Miss Orr. “But I
still receive many calls from
homemakers wanting to know

ever, if the odor is bad, you
may need to go a step further.
Use a cupful of household am
monia to a gallon of water.
Keep an open container of this
in the closed freezer overnight.
Remove the ammonia and wash
the freezer with strong soda
water. Rinse and be sure all
trace of ammonia is gone.
‘If your freezer does not have
a belt and if there is no plas
tic inside, you can use the dry
heat method to remove odor,”
cautions Miss Orr. "You can
put an old-fashioned toaster (not
the pop-up kind) or a hairdryer
inside the freezer. Let It stay
until the inside freezer walls

freezer.”
Miss Orr says the freezer
should smell clean and cold.
Follow these suggestions for
avoiding freezer odors.
"Put your food in containers
and packages that let no mois
ture out of the food and no air
into it. Be sure the packaging
material Is put on the food right
before it is frozen.
"Keep the temperature at
least as cold as zero degrees
to store the food. Freeze food
at a lower temperature if pos
sible. Do not overload your
freezer with unfrozen food.
“If you smoke, do so away
from the freezer when it is
open. If you visit a freezer
locker plant, don’t smoke in the
processing, chilling, freezing or
storage rooms, either.
“Keep the plug securely
fastened in the socket. Check
often to see if the freezer is
operating properly. Never pull
the master switch when you
leave home.”
If food spoils in your freezer,
you are in for a lot of trouble.
You will need patience while
working on the freezer.
Remove the food, disconnect
the freezer and defrost it. Wash
the freezer inside with a cloth
or sponge wrung out of water
