Page Two THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, June 28, 1963 Buds AND Blossoms By MAMIE MILLER porches that need heat re lief in summer. They shade your home In summer and keep cold winds off in winter. Clear your garden of excess limbs, leaves and dead seed pods. You will give the Insects less place to dwell. This week, for our Buds and Blossoms poem, we turn to the comforting lines of **A Good Man Never Dies” penned by James Whitcomb Riley. A good man never dies— In worthy deed and prayer And helpful hands, and honest eyes. If smiles or tears be there; Who lives for you and me-- Llves for the world he tries To help—he lives eternally. A good man never dies. Who lives to bravely take His share of toil and stress. And, for his weaker fellows’ sake. Makes every burden less,— He may, at last, seem worn-- Lle fallen—hands and eyes Folded—yet, though we mourn and mourn, A good man never dies. One of our favorite stories concerns the census taker who called at the home of a woman who could hardly be termed an intellectual. Upon learning that she had four small children, he wanted to know their exact ages. She was unable to supply him with the Information, but the census taker was quite per sistent about the matter. “I’ve got toputsomethlngdownonthls blank,” he told the illiterate mother. “Well,” she replied, “I’ve got one lap child, one crawler, one porch child, and one yard child.” That’s the way he filled in the questional re, and the government folks In Washing ton knew what the mother meant if they’ve been parents. How long is a child an in fant? Authorities say It extends from birth until the little fellow begins to walk. While we hardly took notice, they pushed the federal government Into thousands of busi ness ventures, from sawmills to bakeries. In the field of electric power, 5'^ billion dollars are now invested in federally owned plants and lines. The expansion of government-in-business is clearly a dangerous course. When government owns business it gains political and economic power—the means to control goods and jobs. With power thus concentrated it can become difficult for citizens to preserve their freedoms. A thread at a time you hardly notice. But the danger is persistent, and loss of freedom lies in the spun-out web.
