Already there Is unemploy ment and ‘‘a great deal of un deremployment In most North Carolina communities.” This Is still true even though some 300.000 people have left the state In the past decade to seek new employment opportunities. Demand for new Industry Is great among states and com munities. They are seeking In dustrial development as a means of employing people and their resources more produc tively. It Is estimated that there are 14.000 organizations In the United States whose objective Is to attract new Industry and assist existing Industry. North Carolina has been one of the pacesetters In the race to develop non-farm job op portunities. Its Industrial deve lopment program has been re organized by some as being the best In the nation. ‘‘The main concern Is to use Industry to the best advantage of North Carolina to obtain economic growth,” econom ists ; at N. C. State relate. The state has 38 counties that have been designated as having substantial and persistent un employment. ‘‘Our problem Is how to use Industry and Industrial potential to provide more and better employment opportunities for people and their resources and thus In crease economic growth,” the economists say. They point to several alter natives available relative to Industrial growth as a means to economic growth of an area or state. The first of these Is the question, should the only ef forts be to maintain present Industry? This Is asked In light of the fact that some problems, as well as benefits, accompany Industrialization.
