Chautauqua has its own hotels, cottages, lodging houses, cls^ss buildings, and athletic Helds for physical ed ucation. Millions of dollars have gone into the project. According to our Compton’s Encyclopedia, the Institution was founded to provide training for Sunday school teachers. In 1874 John Heyl Vincent, editor of the SundaySchool Journal and later a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal church, and Lewis Miller, a manufacturer of Akron, Ohio, organized a summer class which met at Fair Point on Lake Chautauqua. The name of the meeting place was soon changed to Chau tauqua. It was one of the first institutions to offer summer study. Interest was so great that by 1879 instruction was being gdven In foreign languages and education methods. Rapid expansion followed, with es tablishment of a School of The ology and a Chautauqua Univer sity. The only freedom worth pos sessing is that which gives enlargement to a people’s eftergy.
