Page Eight THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, July 12, 1963 New Bern teen agers (and maybe we should knock on wood) seem to be having less traffic accidents and boating and swim ming mishaps this summer. Va cation time is very dangerous, and the only way to prevent tragedy Is for everyone to ob serve the rules of s^ety. Even when you’re careful yourself, someone else’s care lessness may Involve you In an accident. However, your chances are certainly better If you do all you can to elim inate the terrible death toll on our highways, and at places where outdoor recreation Is enjoyed. As a youthful driver, you can For Top Tunes by Your Favorite Recording Stars YOUR TEEN-AGE MUSIC CENTER IS HAWKS Radio & Appliance Co. 327 Middle St. be a good example to others, and encourage them not to be reckless. You can also refuse to ride with someone who In sists on driving an automobile in a manner that endangers your life and the lives of other motorists and pedestralns. Accidents on streets and highways usually could have been prevented, and tragedies on rivers and at beaches don’t Just happen. The same foolish daring that can get you In trouble behind the wheel of a car will also get you In trouble when you’re swimming or boating or skiing. Don’t try to show off. The urge to Impress people with your reckless acts will probably Im press them most with the fact that you aren’t as mature as a young person of your age should be. Some adults are Immature too, and authorities will tell you that they cause a lot of ac cidents. If this sounds like preaching, just remember that we’re not only preaching to you but preaching to ourself. As this column Is being written, New Bern teen agers are continu ing their record of fewer ac cidents during the summer months. Let’s keep up the good work. Now for our wise saying. As Seen in The Mirror's SPORTS otfV.6 ct\oHS of Athletes and Events Dozens of players In the Majors have a loj^ following among New Bern baseball fans. Television, more than anything else, erased the Intervening miles, and brought viewers and their diamond Idols close to gether. One star, above all others, would probably rate a spot on every New Biernlans list of favorites. His parents christen ed him Lawrence Peter Berra, but he Is known affectionately by millions the world over as just plain Yogle-lf you can call a name like Yogi plain. Now officially designated a coach by the New York Yankees, Berra Is still called upon to deliver at the plate when his team needs power In a pinch. The big fellow is nobody’s sissy at wielding the lumber, although the years are catching up with him. Yogi couldn’t be surer of a place In baseball’s Hall of Fame at Cooperstown If the selections were rigged in his behalf. Who else has played In 74 World Series games, made 71 hits, and batted in 39 runs? He has accepted more fielding chances than any catcher In World Series history. To be exact, he has played In 13 World Series, and has appeared In every All- Star Game since his first one In 1949. He credits Bill Dickey with making a catcher out of him, when he came to the Yanks as an awkward outfielder who couldn’t do much defensively but could make a bat do won drous things. Dickey figured why Yogi, with that strong arm of his, was throwing wildly to bases when ever he caught. "Bill noticed that I was catching flat footed,’’ says Berra. "That was my trouble, and he changed me.’’ Dickey’s alertness In the matter Is further proof that he too was one of the greatest Yankees of them all. Baseball has never seen a friendlier guy than Yogi, nor a more talkative one. “That’s why I never liked playing out field,’’ he admits, "I got lone some out there with no one to talk to.’’ Even Ted Williams, who was all business at the plate, used to converse with him.
