The apartment dweller In the big city who takes an occasional Sunday stroll In the park can get It. Even If you stick to the walks, your dog can bring back the volatile oils on his coat. Smoke from a neighbor’s trash fire can waft droplets Into your yard. Poison Ivy and its close kin, poison oak, are three-leafed climbing plants. On the ground they are about a foot high. Us ually they climb walls, trees, fences. Sometimes they mix In with honeysuckle and other climbing plants, and are very hard to detect. Poison sumac is a small shrub with small white berries. Whether It’s ivy, oak or su mac, the results are about the same—a stinging, Itching patch of blisters. If the rash gets Into the eyes, or spreads over a considerable portion of the body. It can become serious. There Is no simple cure for poison ivy. Lotions and oint ments can help to ease the dis comfort while the ailment runs its course. Don’t waste your money on a quack remedy tha claims It will cure poison Ivy. The best precaution Is to know how to recognize the plants and avoid them.
