HERE’S PROOF—Outsiders say New Bern High school stadium is the best lighted non-college field in North Carolina. This photo of a typical game shows they are stating a fact. Have you bought your season ticket from a member of the New Bern Boosters Club? As Seen in The Mirror's SPORTS \vy» of Athletes and Events It’s a cinch no other New Bern football fan Is more In terested In the East Carolina College Pirates than Don Brent. He and Coach Clarence Stasa- vlch grew up In the same town, Georgetown, 111., and both play ed for Georgetown High. Stas was a varsity guard when Don was a ball carrier on the freshman team. Later, Don quarterbacked the varsity for three years, and Stas came to Lenoir Rhyne, here In the Old North State, where he was a sensational linemen. The future Pirate coach did a hitch In the Navy, and re turned to Lenoir Rhyne to guide that school’s gridiron destiny. His long coaching record there, before accepting the East Car olina College spot, was one of the most Impressive in the nation. He could have stayed forever at his alma mater, but East Carolina’s expansion program, with excellent prospects of getting into the Southern Con ference, was an Inducement that Stasavlch couldn’t turn down. Ever since their school days together, the two George- towners have kept In touch. Brent used to attend games at Lenoir Rhyne, despite the great distance from New Bern, and needless to say he didn’t miss any of the Pirate games at Greenville last season. Don did a hitch In service too, as a Marine from 1936 to 1940. He has been In New Ben since 1944, and Is the represen tative for Grumman Aircraft at Cherry Point. He and his family have made many friends In our town, and understandably so. Georgetown’s population is only 4,000, but it’s In a coal mining area where tough foot ball players are produced year In and year out. Two of Its stalwarts have captained the University of Illinois eleven and another has performed for the Chicago Bears. The loudest rooter in the new East Carolina stadium Is bound to be Don Brent. irs Broddy's FOR DRY CLEANING & LAUNDRY Pick-Up and Delivery Service 320 First Street ME 7-2159 Top Ten Tunes In Nev/ Bern This Week 1.
