Buds
AND
Blossoms
By
MAMIE MILLER
“This Is my commandment,
that you love one another as I
have loved you. Greater love has
no man than this, that a man
lay down his life for his
friends.’’--John 15: 12-14.
While people are enjoying
their summer cottages at the
seashore, they may be consid
ering more shade trees. Pines
and cedars are used most to
withstand the sands and storms.
Black gum, honey locust, crab
apples, Washington thorn, gray
birch, willows, beech, laurel,
and many oaks Including the live
oak, and yaupon are delightful
trees to grow on the seashore.
It Is now time for the last
planting of glads. The one's
planted now will bloom before
frost. They were first grown
here in the early 1800’s, but
we do have a great collection
to select from. The Colonial
glad is still beautiful, and has
its place In the garden.
If you get a chance to pur
chase “Souvenir de la Malmal-
son’’, a bourbon rose, be sure
to get it. It is a rose dating
back to 1843. It is pale pink,
and clusters appear all season.
It is a rose that speaks the
language of the 18th and 19th
centuries.
When azaleas, camelleas,
hollies, and rhododendrons be
gin to droop, start to putting
more water around them. As
the roots grow close to the
surface, the tiny roots will
be killed by the heat. Protect
them during extreme hot
weather by putting pine needles,
oak leaves, or wood clipping
around them. It takes only about
two inches to mulch them.
For this week’s Buds and
Blossoms poem, our choice is
“Through The Year’’ by Julian
S. Cutler.

When the violets unfold,
And the buttercups and cowslips
Fill the fields with yellow
gold;
In the time of apple blossoms,
When the happy bluebirds
sing.
Filling all the world with glad
ness—
God be with you in the Spring!
God be with you in the Summer
When the sweet June roses
blow,
When the bobolinks are laughing
And the brooks with music
flow;
When the fields are white with
daisies
And the days are glad and
long—
God be with you in the summer.
Filling all your world with
song.
God be with you in the Autumn,
When the birds and flowers
have fled.
And along the woodland path
ways
Leaves are falling, gold and
red;
•When the Summer lies behind
you,
In the evening of the year--
God be with you in the Autumn,
Then to fill your heart with
cheer.
God be with you in the Winter,
When the snow lies deep and
white.
When the sleeping fields are
silent
And the stars gleam cold and
bright.
When the hand and heart are
tired
With life’s long and weary
quest--
God be with you in the winter.
Just to guide you into rest.

IF you COULD CHOOSE THE SLOT WHERE YOUR TAX MONEY GOES...
tYJIRI
you would probably pick defense, or space ex
ploration, or some other vital government job.
It isn’t likely that you’d pick a job for which
there is no need to spend your tax money.
Yet some people keep urging the federal
government to pour a lot of your tax money
into federally-owned electric power plants
and lines, where 5^ billion dollars have al
ready gone.
There’s not the slightest need for this kind of
HIfflYii 11 ttvHs.iniei 11 i i11I IIM M s} f I r
spending. The nation’s more than 300 investor-
owned electric light and power companies can
supply all the additional power a growing
America will need.
Needless spending of your tax money would
bo senseless at any time, but it’s downright
dangerous today when so many billions are
needed for essential things.
