The Rev. Mr. Boekenhover, a good Dutchman, loved hyacinths. He loved then so much that he placed them In bird cages and suspended them from the celling, so that nothing would Injure them. We love them too when they are blooming, but we seem to forget to plant them In the fall, grow them In window boxes, terraces or gardens, as well as In water and pots Indoors. Don’t forget to plant rose mary. It grows In your window well, and especially likes the cool weather. Rose and peppermint geran iums are nice to keep In winter. The foliage Is so fragrant, and It Is used to perfume dresser drawers and linen, as well as for beauty. For this week’s buds and Blossoms poem, we go way back to the 16th century and Herrick's “Counsel To Girls.” You’ll recognize the first line as one of the most widely known phrases ever penned. Gather ye rose-buds while ye may Old Time Is still a-flylng; And this same flower that smiles to-day. Tomorrow will be dying. The glorious Lamp of Heaven, the Sun, The higher he’s a-getting The sooner will his race be run. And nearer he’s to setting. That age Is best which is the first. When youth and blood are What's COOKING? Stewart Granger comforts Christine Kaufmann in a scene from Metro-Goidwyn-Mayer's “Swordsman of Siena," Gran ger portrays a daredevil 16th century mercenary ready to flash his sword for any damsel in distress in the swashbuck ling drama, also starring Sylva Koscina. It was filmed in CinemaScope and color, warmer; But being spent, the worse, and worst Times, still succeed the former. Then be not coy, but use your time; And while ye may, go marry; For having lost but once your prime. You may lor ever tarry. FLYING STONE KILLS LAD HILLSDALE, N.J.—A 9-year old received a fatal blow on his head while waiting for a ball game to begin. The victim, Leslie D. Katz, was warming up for the game when he screamed and col lapsed. None of the boys saw what happened. It was believed that a sharp stone was hurled by a nearby rotary lawn mower operating 100 feet away. The lad died 2-1/2 hours later from the large swelling behind his right ear. The other day an exceedingly plump woman was standing In front of us In the check-out line at a New Bern supermarket. Judging by the amount of food the cashier had rung up for her, she was planning to hiber nate for several months. Glancing In our direction, she remarked, “Wouldn’t It be nice If we didn’t have to eat.” It Is a statement made rather often In supermarkets and else where, and usually brings forth a nod of agreement. On the morning In question- having scanned our bathroom scales with a sense of guilt, we were In no mood to agree with the fat lady’s great big He. She didn’t mean what she said, and the truth was bulging out all over her. “No, It wouldn’t be nice If we didn’t have to eat,” For virtually every creature on earth. Including the type of female who Is an atrocity In shorts or slacks, and the type of male who looks inflated to the point of bursting, cramming food Is much to be desired. Few of us, to take care of our constant physical demands, eat to live. Instead, to a shameful extent, we Uve to eat. Periodically, when our con science (or tummy) gets to hurting us, we’ll diet until our will power collapses. It seems like ages ago that hundreds of New Bernians—or perhaps thousands—were either on a Metracal binge or planning to go on one tomorrow. A lot of boasting was done about the poundage lost, and some folks did lose weight. So far as we can recall, we haven’t heard anyone mention Metracal lately. If the stuff Is being swigged In New Bern to the extent It once was, the fact Is a well kept secret. Mean while, the fat citizens of our town (Including us) waddle home with sacks full of calories— and It will ever be the same. MASONIC Sun. - Wed.
