Those make lovely gifts for hos pitals, showers, and for friends or relatives who are confined to their homes. When you plant seeds this fall, follow the rules to get a good stand. It takes years to become an expert gardener. 1-Don’t try to grow them on land that Is too poor. 2—Don’t plant In the shade. 3—Do not work the soli when It Is too wet. 4.— Plant Blilbs the right depth. 5—Thin seedlings before they get too big. 6—Protect little seedlings from breezes and flood. 7—Plant seed across a slope instead of up and down a slope. 8—Don’t put too much lime on seed beds. For this week’s Buds and Blossoms poem, our choice is “Written In Early Spring’’ by William Wordsworth. I heard a thousand blended notes While In a grove I sat re clined. In that sweet mood when plea sant thoughts Bring sad thoughts to the mind. To her fair works did Nature link The human soul that through me ran; Alid much It grieved my heart to think What Man has made of Man. Through primrose tufts, in that sweet bower. The periwinkle trail’d Its wreaths; And ‘tls my faith that every flower Enjoys the air It breathes. The birds around me hopp’d and played. Their thoughts I cannot mea sure. But the least motion which they made It seemed a thrill of pleasure. The budding twigs spread out their fan To catch the breezy air; And I must think, do all I can. That there was pleasure there. If this belief from heaven be sent, If such be Nature’s holyplan. Have I not reason to lament What Man has made of Man. Danny Kaye uses a dumb waiter as an escape route, in the course of 'The Man From the Diners' Club," new Columbia Pictures release in which he plays the title role. What's COOKING.’ New Bernlans who enjoy can ned peaches (when the fresh ones aren’t available) may find It worthwhile to sample un- advertlsed and less expensive Virands put up by smadl ca.n- nerles. Baxter's Studio 323 Pollock Street ME 7-«345 striking a bargain, taste more like fresh peaches than the more expensive, deep-yellow halves packed in heavy syrup. Understandably, the average New Bern housewife who has to pinch pennies, or should, shies away from buying hams as often as she would like to. The price per pound Is never cheap, but Invariably after pur chasing one and making the most of It, we’re convinced It’s a sound Investment. Like the white potato, ham can be served in countless ways. You probably know a dozen or two recipes for combining with other Items In your pantry, and still more recipes are apt to be included In any good cookbook. In most New Bern homes, butter Is a luxury that seldom appears on the table. Most of us have long since become re signed to margarine. It’s some thing of a paradox, but families using butter to the greatest extent are those who are getting government assistance In the form of surplus food. Most things we find so tasty In childhood lose much of their appeal In later life. Belatedly, this writer has discovered that green peanuts, pulled up In the field, are a delightful except- tlon. If anything, they taste even better than they did almost half a century ago. The urge to try them once again came when we glimpsed a barefoot farm boy feasting on goobers he had Just yanked out of the ground. When we Joined him at the edge of the field, he Invited us to share the treat with him. Before It’s too late, we’d like to go back for a second helping.
