Most of us, as the years
roll by, reluctantly discard
some of the keepsakes that were
near and dear to us several
decades earlier. Few of us,
however, dispose of our High
school annuals.
John Jennette, whom we were
privileged to recognize at Fri
day night’s NewBern-Washlng-
ton football game as one of the
town’s all-time sports stars.
Is not exempt from such senti
mentality.
He has been kind enough to
lend us his 1921 year book-
still In excellent condition. To
anyone who likes to turn back
the clock lor a second glimpse
at fondly remembered things,
the Items contained therein are
of tender Interest.
The annual’s dedication
reads: To Miss Amy Caldwell
and Miss Sarah Lesley,
friends, advisers, and teachers
of the High school pupils, who
have been “to our virtues very
kind, toour faults a little blind.”
Others comprising the New
Bern High school faculty In
cluded J. W. Bakes, R.K. Pitts,
Graham Barden, Mirgaret
Iseley, Emma Babbitt, Carrie
Saunders, Gertrude Smith,
Bettle Windley, Sara Gwinn and
Mary Snow,
Listing their “heart’s de
sire” the yearbook revealed
that Bakes wanted a steady girl.
Miss Iseley to have everything
perfect so there would be no
complaint. Miss Babbitt to have
her grade in perfect order.
Miss Saunders to be as contrary
as she desired. Miss Smith to
be a housewife. Miss Windley
to have perfect composition
classes. Miss Gwynn to defeat'
Wilmln^on in basketball, and
Miss Snow to have time to sleep
and dress her hair.

Rudolph Jackson was presi
dent of the senior class, Gladys
Sexton was secretary and

New Bern High school had
no band, back in 1921, but It
did have an orchestra directed
by Professor J. Henri Bourde-
lals, Margaret Aman was the
pianist, Zora Styron the first
