Friday, October 18, 1963 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Page Five MIRROR MEDITATION By EMMITT L. BRINSON Last week In this column we discussed “Faith”, and giving of substance to faith by acting upon our beliefs. “Faith with out substance could be wishful thinking.” Somewhere In this web of thought, the sub-conscious seems to arouse a sense of “doubt.” Pursuit of doubt leads us to rationalizing, to find rea son and logic; a sense of bal ance. This, then Is another step to establishing fact and truth. The result of giving substance to faith. Reason Is not Incompatible to Christianity, as most of the New Testmant is based upon it. Christ said: “Come now let W. C. CHADWICK GENERAL INSURANCE Clark Building Talephones Office ME 7-3144>-Home ME 7-3433 Scott TILE CO. TILE AND FLOOR COVERING L. C. Peter urged us to “Stir up our minds.” “Reason,” as defined by Webster is; “That which Is thought or which is alleged In words as ground or cause of opinion, conclusion or deter mination; the cause principle.” Helen Keller stated; “Most people measure their happiness in terms of physical pleasures and material possession. If hap piness Is to be so measured, I, who can not hear or see, have every REASON to sit in a corner with folded hands and weep.” But we know that Helen Keller by adding substance to her faith, accomplished what ap pears to have been a miracle; to become an Intellectual with out the basic principles of com munication. Ah, yes, it was phenominal. I believe Reason is the high est faculty of the human mind, by which man is distinguished from brutes, and which enables him to contemplate things spir itual as well as material; to weigh all that can be said or thought for and against them, and hence to draw conclusions and to act accordingly; an intu ition or faculty of the mind by which it distinguishes truth from falsehood, and good from evil (like conscience) which enables the possessor to deduce inferences from facts—or from propositions. Robert E. D. Clark wrote in his bo'ik; (Christian belief and Science:) “To think con secutively, coherently, or logi cally. So by reasoning we mean at least this, that we arrange our thoughts, not at random, but In order; If possible with due regard to the rules of logic, each thought suggesting the one that follows. Some might add that the “objective fact” should usually be the basis of our train of reasoning and that the last thought in the train should be by way of a con clusion.” Reason, however, is by no means an infallible guide to knowledge and truth, as the whole story of science relates that again and again the path of reason led to wrong con clusions—such conclusions far out numbering correct ones. So Rationalizing and reason ing thereby will remain a pur suit of a doubting mind--or part of a process of giving sub stance to faith—a faith in action—forever seeking the road to truth. And the road to truth never ends. It is endless. Along its route arising from faith will produce many layers of knowl edge. But all knowledge begins with faith of the Individual and the masses, with each genera tion; and It ends in the same manner. For at the end of each pur suit there remains yet evidence required of things not seen. Truth and knowledge is but an embryo--unborn. Never to be completely seen or contained. Only the Creator has the key. And so—Faith Is the begin ning—Faith In the ending—and it Inevitably remains that Faith without works (substance) lies dormant. It Is lost. wall so they can turn the land to farming.
