1. TRUE.—The I’o.stal Inspection Service is the oldest law
enforcement agency of the Federal Govei-nment. It dates
back to the days of Benjamin Franklin, who was appointed
Postmaster at I’hiladelphia in 17d7. He was al.so the first
po.stal inspector and lie was given the additional duties of

IF WE KNEW
There are gems of wondrous brightness
Offimes lying at our feet
And we pass them walking thoughtless
Down the busy, crowded street;
If we knew, our pace would slacken.
We would step more oft with care
Lest our careless feet be treading
To the earth some jewel rare.
If we knew what hearts are aching
For the comforts we might bring.
If we knew what souls are yearning
For the sunshine we could fling.
If we knew what feet are weary
Walking pathways roughly laid.
We would quickly hasten forward
Stretching forth our hands to aid.
If we knew what friends around us feel
A want they never tell.
That some word which we have spoken.
Pained or wounded where it fell.
We would speak in accents tender
To each friend we chanced to meet.
We would give to each one freely
Smiles of sympathy so sweet.

powers and privileges by the
name of Pennsylvania a name
the King would give it In favor
of my father. I chose New Wales
being a hilly country, and when
the secretary, a watchman
refused to call It New Wales,
I proposed Sylvanla and they
added Penn to It though I was
much opposed to It, and went
to the King to have It struck
out. He said it was passed and
he would not take it upon him,
nor could twenty guineas move
the Under Secretary to vary the

not as a respect In the King,

The Quaker was right for it is
the almost universal belief that
the State was named for its
owner.
“The Keystone state” Is a
modification of the Keystone of
the Federal Arch, the expres
sion originating from the cen
tral position the state occupies
among the original thirteen,
six being to the north and south
and the other six to the south
and west of it. Should they be
arranged In the form of anarch
each state representing a block
of stone Pennsylvania would be
the Keystone, the people are
nicknamed ‘Leatherheads'.”

The publicity value of a tel
evision station to a community
Is priceless. Washington and
Greenville quickly discover
ed that fact with the advent of
WITN and WNCT, and New Bern
is reaping the same benefit
from WNBE.
For example, the local sta
tion’s program listings are ap
pearing regularly In TV-Gulde,
a weekly magazine that has a
tremendous circulation. Even
before WNBE came to New
Bern, this publication was
enjoying a heavy sale on news
stands here.
Incidentally, viewers In
eastern North Carolina now
make a habit of switching dials,
to pick and choose the best fare
available at the moment. Thanks
to excellent ABC shows, WNBE
Is getting a large share of the
audience. An exception Is the
Jerry Lewis show. It’s a gigan
tic flop.

JOHN BIRCH SOCIETY
TAKES THE POSITION
that most of the Administra
tion’s so-called “civil rights”
program is in flagrant viola
tion of the Tenth Amend
ment to the Constitution of
the United States.
The National COUNCIL
of the Society, meeting in
Boston, emphatically asserts
that many actions being
taken under the “civil rights”
banner are a direct threat to
both the person and property
of every individual Ameri
can, of whatever race, color,
or creed.'
The Society takes no posi
tion with regard to segrega
tion or integration. It has
both segregated and inte
grated chapters, in accord
ance with the wishes of our
members in their respective
communities. The Society
believes that the serious ques
tions involved in this racial
problem should be decided
by local or regional authori
ties, for the smallest practic
able areas, and in no case by
any unit larger than a state
government. The Federal
Government is strictly for
bidden by the Constitution
from either making these
decisions or from using mili
tary compulsion to enforce |
them.
The Tenth Amendment is i
the keystone to our Bill of |
Rights, and it is explicit. Our
Constitution could never
have been adopted without
this guarantee against the
very usurpation of power in
which the Federal Govern
ment is now engaged. The
Tenth Amendment has not
been repealed, and cannot be
repealed, by the Supreme
Court, or the Executive De
partment, or even by the
Congress—but only by the
people themselves, acting
through their state govern
ments.
The COUNCIL urges
every patriotic American
citizen to reread the Consti
tution carefully for himself,
and to enter into a gigantic
moral crusade to insist that
both the spirit and the letter
of the Bill of Rights be ob
served by all public officials.
The present course of this
Administration, by substitu
ting a government of men
for a government of laws, is
heading us .straight for dic
tatorship and tyranny.
