Use milk cartons and egg crates to plant them In. New Malus, red jade. Is a new weeping crab-apple tree. In the spring It Is filled with single white blossoms, and In the fall It hangs full of scarlet fruit. Remember the trees that didn’t bloom last year? Hang a tin can up a tree with water In It. Get flowers from another tree and put In It, then have a bee party. Next year you will have blooms. Throw bait out on soil for slugs before mulching around shrubs. They like to harbor In dead hollow stems, damp leaves and limbs. But for the land’s sake, keep all the things that grow on It except all diseased foliage and seed pods. You may need many ground covers this winter. Violets will grow In any shady spot. The roots spread and the seed tall. There Isn’t anything as sweet as the old fashioned violet. Do you remember the ditch banks, the walk ways? Didn’t the violet find Its way Into each home? A little toothpick holder, a tiny pitcher, and the old fash ioned soap dish, plus the tiny little glass slipper held the tiny little blooms. Remember, violets drink water from the flowers and not from the stems. Be nice to the violet, it was Grandma’s favorite. We turn once more, this week, to the works of James Whit comb Riley for our Buds and Blossoms poem. He titled It “The Touch of Loving Hands.” Light falls the rain-drop on the fallen leaf. And light o’er harvest-plain and garnered sheaf— But lightlier falls the touch of loving hands. Light falls the dusk of mild midsummer night. And light the first star’s faltering lance of light On glimmering lawns,—but lightlier loving hands. And light the feathery flake of early snows. Or wisp of thistle-down that no wind blows. And light the dew,—but light lier loving hands. Light-falling dusk, or dew, or summer rain. Or down of snow or thistle- all are vain— For lightlier falls the touch of loving hands. Looking Glass- (Continued from Page 1) odist church a few years back— has had some interesting tele phone experiences too. Once, In the wee small hours of the morning, his phone rang omnlously and Insistently, When he picked up the receiver he discovered a highly Intoxicated gent at the other end of the line, “Is this Walnut 6-2345?” the drunk Inquired In a voice as thick as four hunks of corn- bread welded on top of each other, “No,” politely replied the mild mannered minister, “this Is Walnut 6-4327,” There was a brief pause, and then the inebriated individual exclaimed, “Good Lord, man, you’ve done answered the wrong number.” Dr. Allen, who Is seldom at a loss for words himself, couldn’t think of a proper comeback, so he placed the receiver on the hook, shrugged his shoulders, and sleepily groped his way back to bed. * vv * y\/VoNTGOMERY WARD 229 Middle - Ph. 8-1176 Open Friday Night Til 8:30 , S SAVE 4.10 GIRLS’ FUR* COLLARED COATS FOR PERFECT GROWN-UP TOUCH 20«« A fine saving on a style she’ll love.
