The modest NBHS basketballer appeared stunned, and his eyes were glazed as he came to the plat- lorm. As we said in making the pre sentation, his rise to sports ex cellence is a Cinderella story. He was cut Irom the Bruin squad at the outset ol his athletic career because he showed little promise. He was determined to over come this heartbreak. Until his senior year, the slender youngster could do no better than ride the bench and get into games for occasional brief ac tion. Like Cinderella, Eddie was a nobody who became somebody after years of obscurity and disappointment. He was superb as a senior. What thrilled us, as much as Kwasnick, was the ovation he got when his name was announced as the trophy winner. The belated recognition that came to him was, in a sense, recognition for every athlete who labors long In the sha dows against discouraging odds. There’ll never be a happy end ing for most of them, but from now on they can say, “Eddie Kwasnick did it, maybe I’ll doit too,’’ Although Yogi Berra Is view ed with admiration by virtually all New Bern fans, his pro motion to Yankee manager hasn’t depleted the ranks of Yankee haters here. Folks who habitually pull against the ball club he now pilots still rejoice each time the team Is trounced. Not that the American League champs are lacking supporters In these parts. The true Yankee fan Is as loyal as he Is vocal.
