THE NEW BERN MIRROR. NEW BERN, N. C.
Page Sevwi
New Bern parents, like others
the world over, fall far short
of perfection.
One way you can gain greater
respect from your child Is by
keeping all promises, Includ
ing threats. In past gener
ations, Ma or Pa wasn’t kidding
about those grim warnings. One
good licking was enough to con
vince the seat of your pants
of that fact.
Modern parents—too many of
them—are afraid that stern
measure will cause their young
sters to hate, rather than love
them. This Is a foolish
approach. To begin with, love
without respect Is of question
able value.
We would hardly advise beat
ing your child Into a cringing,
fearful youngster. That Isn’t the
answer. Let your child know
where he stands, and where you
stand, while teaching him Inde
pendence, initiative, consider
ation for others, and the joy
In sharing.
When he or she Is old enough
to comprehend—and they do
comprehend quite early—en
courage them to do things with
out supervision. If your child Is
creative, a chance to express
his own Ideas Is of utmost Im
portance to him.
God has made us Individuals.
Just as no two snowflakes are
alike, no two humans are alike.
Naturally, parents should use
their adult wisdom to guide their
offspring in the right paths.
What we shouldn’t do is try to
fashion a child In our own Image.
One of the pathetic things
about today’s world, of course,
is the way we shy away from
being different. Conformity is
considered necessary to keep
pace with the status seekers.
More power to the few who have
enough spunk to just be them
selves, as the Good Lord Intend
ed,
That’s why children and old
folks hold special appeal for this
editor. The children haven’t put
on their mask of hypocricy, and
the old folks have cast theirs
aside. In between are the mas
queraders.

There are people alive today whose grand
fathers could remember when the United States
was a “backward nation” . . . when we were far
behind other nations in population, capital, labor
roads schools and technology.
But our Constitution gave us something that
others did not have—a form of government
which encouraged its citizens to use their savings
skill and ideas to advance themselves confident
that what they earned could not be arbitrarily
taken away.
The result has been the greatest outburst of
energy and Invention in history. As just one
example the electric light and power industry—
built by individual initiative and financed in the
traditional American business way—has made us
the leading “electric nation’’ by far.
We have, in fact, electric generating capacity
greater than that of the next five nations com
bined And the investor-owned companies will
stay well ahead of our nation’s needs.
Isn't it clear by now that the more people can
do for themselves the more powerful America
is bound to be?
And isn’t it strange that those who want our
Federal Government to own and manage this
or any other industry should claim their ideas
are “progressive"?
The ideas they advocate would set us back
instead of forward along a road that has
proved it leads to progress.
