Friday, May 29, 1964 This week we want to salute one of our former New Bern High School students, John Gaskill, Jr. In addition to playing trom bone In the college concert and marching bands at Wake For est, and In the Reserve Officers Training Corps Band at the school he has the title of com mander of the band and rifle platoons. Because the ROTC band does not have a director, John was pressed Into active service In this capacity when the group participated recently In the National ROTC Association Band and Drum and Bugle Corps Competition at Jersey City, N. J., and at the New York World’s Fair, The concert portion was at Jersey City, and the march ing and maneuvering competi tion was in the Singer Bowl of the World’s Fair. John, 21, played trombone in the New Bern High School band, and got his first directing experience with a small student band. He has majored In English at Wake Forest, and expects to continue his studies In graduate school. He plans to put off his tour of Army duty while a grad uate student, then serve “two or three years.” John was the only senior in the ROTC band this year, and there were only four juniors. The rest were sophomores and freshmen. The band had only a month’s notice to prepare for the World’s Fair competition, but performed very creditably. We are very proud of John’s record at Wake Forest. He has been a credit to NBHS, and to our town. Included with the fea ture story about him In the Winston-Salem Journal was a picture of him, looking quite serious and dignified. W. C. Looking Glass- (Contlnued from Page 1) Some of New Bern’s leading male citizens won’t admit it, but rain did represent a prob lem for older boys. A sudden downpour was certain to ruin the cigarette butts that were harvested dally from local side walks for furtive enjoyment. In retrospect, we’re con vinced that most adult smokers were healthy then. Otherwise, more diseases than you could shake a stick at. Ifyou’reaman of middle age or older, you know we’re not spoofing. Filters wouldn’t have been much protection In a situation like this. Maybe there was a guardian angel around, or per haps the germs ate each other up. Top Ten Tunes In Nevv Bern This Week 1.
