Naturally, Bill Bunting (6-7)
will be the big gun for New Bern
High school’s hustling basket
ball team this season, but it’s
no one-man outfit.

With Cecil Harrison and
Jerry Verrone at the guard
positions, the Bears have a
pair of sentinels who can hold
their own against any other de
fensive combo in the North
eastern Conference.
Opponents of the Bruins have
no illusions when it comes to
Bunting. The general strategy
employed by most coaches will
be to anticipate a minimum of 25
points from the lanky goal
tosser, while restricting his
teammates to as few baskets
as possible.
Kinston’s Red Devils, the de
fending loop champions, have
great respect for Bunting. He
scored 86 points against them
in three games last year, but
their own offensive success en
abled them to squeak through.
The Devils have another
strong club this season, and un
doubtedly will elect to run with
the Bears. However, a few
Northeastern quints may resort
to slow-down tactics against
the local youngsters.
If the Bruins are able to come
up with a good defense, to go
along with what should be an
adequate offense, they should
be a real contender for the loop
crown. There are few soft
spots along the way, how
ever.
Aaron Bryant, a product of
New Bern’s J, 'T. Barber High
school, is having a fine season
as a defensive and for the Los
Angeles Rams. And Walt Bel
lamy (also from J, T. Barber)
is continuing his pro basket
balling at Baltimore.
Walt made All-America at
Indiana, starred for the U. S.
Olympic champions, and was
rookie of the year in his first
pro season a few years back.
Last season wasn’t his best,
but he bids fair to draw plenty
of sports headlines again this
year.
