No New Bern baseball fan,
to our knowledge. Is comnletel'y
Indifferent about the New York
Yankees.
Almost without exception,
local followers of the national
pastime are divided into Yankee
lovers and Yankee haters.
You’ll find more of the latter,
since most mortals like to see
the high and mighty knocked
flat on their posterior.
Admittedly, there are plenty
of people who scramble to get
on the band wagon with a
winner, but one needs only to

scrutinize the popularity of the
lowly New York Mets to realize
that David, not Goliath, is ever
and eternally the logical hero.
Connie Mack discovered as
much when his Phlladelpia
Athletics were wlnningpennants
consistently in the late
Twenties. Crowds dwindled at
Shlbe Park, so Mr. Mc-
Gillicuddy (Cornelius that is)
sold his brightest stars and
pocketed the cash.
A good contender, placing in
the first division year in and
year out, often pays off better
than a champ. Fans will
grumble, but meanwhile the
turnstiles keep clicking at a
merry pace.
The most exciting thing that
could possibly happen in the
Majors would be a pennant for
the Mets in the National League
and likewise for the Yankees in
the American. It may never
happen, but hundreds of
thousands would want World
Series tickets.
Yankee followers won’t
agree, and who can blame them,
but and end to the team’s
domination of the American
League is long overdue. It isn’t
good for any sport-pro
fessional, college. High school
or kid league—when one ball
club shows marked superiority
repeatedly, season alter sea
son.
Don’t count the Yanks out, _
>iow»vcr. A lot can happen be-
fore September rolls around.
All signs point to a free for
all battle involving seven teams,
and what could be better?
