Page Two THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, April 29, 1966 J New Bern’s small fry na turally assume that the Batman never has been anytliing else, at least not on television. If he looks familiar to Mom and Pop, it’s probably because he liad the romantic lead (Sgt. Steve Nelson) in the ABC-TV series “The Detectives.” He also played ln“77SunsetStrlp” and “Maverick.” W. C. As long ago as 1950 or thereabout, he was a writer and producer for a Stanford television station. Before tv fame he appeared in eight movies, none of which threatended to win an Oscar. You’ll never hear the Batman complain that he doesn’t like commercials. To do so would be close to treason on his part. He m.ide hundreds of them dur ing the lean days, and one of them, a Captain Quick plug, landed him his present role. The producers of Batman saw him wearing a costume very much like the outfit he now sports, and the spiel he par roted In the commercial was pretty close to Batman lin go too. “This fellow we’ve got ta have,” they figured. Kids take the Batman ser iously, but even as adult view ers, Adam West knows it’s all utterly ridiculous. He has been quoted as saying that the nic est part of his work is “Get ting out of my Batman tights.” As for the most difficult chore he has before the cam era, it’s “Keeping a straight face through some of the dia logue.” A great many of the lines are silly beyond belief, but they’re cleverly written. It takes something approaching genius to attract Juveniles and grown ups (millions of them) for completely opposite rea sons. Actually, countless adults didn’t need an Introduction to Batman when he appeared on their living room screen. They first glimpsed him 27 years ago in a comic strip that en joyed instant popularity.
