VOLUME 9
NEW BERN, N. C.. FRIDAY. JUNE 10. 19M
NUMBER 11
Speaking as an old grad (Class
of *28} who considers such sen
timental gatherings wor^ the
time and trouble, we extend
best wishes to New Bern Hi{di
School's Class of 1936 on the
eve of its well planned Reunion
here.
These youngsters—at least
they were youngsters then-
may haVe been born 30 years
too soon, although It Is doubt
ful that they follow this line of
reasoning. Because (hey grad
uated in the midst of the Great
Depression, they had to forego
the Joy of a yearbook, or even
a class picture.
They had to do without a
lot of other things too during
their teens, but In their hearts,
when they wiUked out of the
Moses Griffin building at Cen
tral School to face a thread
bare world, were memories
to cherish lor a lifetime.
Except for hope and faith, that's
about all they had.
To their everlasting credit,
they didn't become embittered
and lash out against their na
tion and their elders. It was
the end of the educational trail
for many who wanted desperate
ly to go to ccfllege, but they got
Jobs, the ones who could find
a Job and grewup to be good citi
zens.
Not the least of what they
learned, before and after grad
uation, was how to ihake the best
of a bad situation. It was a
lesson, we feel sure, that serv
ed thoip well when mey parted
