Friday, July 29, 1066 Teen Topics IN NEW BERN TODAY New Bern High school stu dents who visited France dur ing recent weeks had no trou ble finding wonderful French fries, but there were no ham burgers to go with them. All teenagers will agree this was a catastr(^>he. If lt*s possible to do so, you should learn typing before you enter college. Professors pre fer typed themes, and with some of them It's a must. In fact, students who can type are able to pick up spending money typ ing papers for other students. Speaking of themes. In a num ber of schools throughout the country reading and grading them Is being done by outsiders rather than by the teacher who assigned them. This relieves the teacher of one of the most distasteful chores In his or her profession. This new approach to the problem makes us wonder whether the teachers who no longer have to wade throue^ themes are Inclined to assign more of them to their students. Also, some schools are now operating eleven months out of the year. This isn't making the teachers happy either, since most of them prefer a three months vacaUonfrom the class room. School officials who have tried the eleven months sys tem say It Is more economical. The eleven months are broken up into quarters, and a pupil Is required to attend three of the four quarters. It sounds somewhat confusing to us. We certainly prefer the system we have at New Bern High school, where everybody starts the same day and attends the same nine months. July Is almost gone, so get set for August and enjoy the rest of your vacation.
