Hi!
As the days of summer go
by, you wonder where In the
world they have all gone so
fast. It seems like just yes
terday when we sat in NBHS
Stadium and received our
diplomas. Yet, that was two
months ago.
I think summer goes faster
than any other season, because
It Is enjoyed so much by school
kids out for a few weeks. Ris
ing seniors let me say one thing
to you. Enjoy your senior year.
It is your last one, don’t goof
off or play around too much,
because that could mean the
difference in graduaUon and
summer school.
Many people say the senior
year is the best one, but you
have to make it the best. En
joy the privileges but don’t
abuse them. They’re lots of
fUn. Underclassmen, don’t be
grudge the seniors their
privileges.
When you stand up for them
in your assemblies, stand in

your place until they are com
pletely out. Some day you’ll
be a senior too, and will want
the same thing done for you.
When you get to college, it
is a lot of hard work, but it
is also fun. Last year, sever
al colleges and universities had
the Pour Seasons, the Mamas
and Papas, Josh White and many
other groups.
This year there will be such
groups as Ray Charles and his
orchestra, Chad and Jeremy,
The Association, andtheKings-
men. So entertainment does
play a part in activities at
many schools.
It hardly seems possible that
New Bern Hi^ school’s
gridiron season is almost here,
but the NBHS Bears are well
aware of this fact. This week
they have launched their train
ing period with a conditioning
program.
All of us owe a great debt
of gratitude to the New Bern
Boosters Club. These local
business men, many of whom
have no children In school,
do so much for our sports.
Largely through their efforts,
we have a High school stadium
with facilities that are the envy
of lots of other schools In
North Carolina.
Looking Glass-
(Continued from page 1)
astounding Is the fact that the
rammed car lurched past the
first car In line on the RIGHT
SIDE, between the first car
and the concrete railing, barely
touching the rl^t tip of the
first car’s bumper.
Both ri^t tires of the sec
ond car blew out, as they came
Into violent contact with the side
of the bridge, but It somehow
squeezed throu^, and ended up
in front of the first car.
The alleged drunk literally
took It on the chin In the crash,
but stitched up In the emergency
room at Craven County Hos
pital, he emerged with a cocky
smile on his face, and waved
goodbye almost ^dly as he
departed In the .custody of the
State Highway Patrol.
Incidentally, two-way bridges
where passing is permitted, and
we don’t mean rlg^t side pass
ing, are an Invitation to tragedy.
There's nowhere to go. In a
jam. As one trooper says,
“You just die, head on.”
BEAUTY IN BERN—Our mother city owes much of
its ancient charm to buildings such as this lovely
structure, the Gothic Town-Hall that graces the Swiss
Capital.
Three Major Types of Molasses
Available to Family Food Buyer
There are three major types
of molasses on the market,
notes Mrs. Ruby Uzzle,
extension consumer marketing
economist. North CarolinaState
University. Yet, each is made
from sugar cane grown in a
warm climate.
Mrs. Uzzle says unsulphur
ed molasses is made from the
juice of sugar cane grown in
the tropics. The juice is
clarified, concentrated and
transferred to warehouses in
the United States where It Is
blended, packaged and market
ed.
Sulphured molasses is apro-
duct of sugar making, Mrs.Uz
zle explains. Sugar cane is
treated with sulphur fUmes
during the sugar extractingpro-
cess.
The two types of edible sul
phured molasses are known
as “first centrifugal” and
“second centrigugal.” First
centrifugal or first grade
molasses, is made by boiUng
sugar cane juice to the prop--
er density and passing It on
to the centrifuge which extracts
sugar crystals and leaves a
yellow-colored molasses.
When this molasses is boiled
and whirled again, more sugar
crystals are extracted, leaving
a second grade of molasses.
Blackstrap molasses is the
result of a third boiling with
more sugar crystals removed.
It has a black color and is
quite bitter. “Most blackstrap
molasses is sold to producers
of Industrial alcohol and animal
feeds,” Mrs. Uzzle observes.
Sorghum, sometimes con
fused with molasses, is made
from one variety of sorghum
plant grown in temperate clim
ates.
The primary food value of
unsulphured and sulphured
molasses, and sor^um is in
the carbohydrate content. They
also contain the minerals cal
cium, phosphorus, iron,sodium
and potassium and seme B
vitamins.
