IN NEW BERN TODAY
Last Friday's holiday from
school, caused by bad weather
conditions, was a case of Indian
giving. You'll have to give it
right back when Easter ar
rives. One of our two holidays
before Easter, or one of the two
immediately followingit,willbe
eliminated.
That is one of the reasons
these four days are put on the
calendar, so that possible sleet
and snow, or some other inter
rupter of our schedule, won't
force us to go beyond the date
for closing the school year.
When your parents tell you
that schools rarely if ever stop
ped functioning because of the
weather in years past, they are
stating a fact. Before consoli
dation, most Craven County stu
dents were within walking dis
tance of the school in their com
munity.
As smaller schools were eli
minated, and thousands of young
people were assigned to larger
ones quite a few miles away,
they had to havesome way toge*
there. It works fine until snow or
ice makes it unsafe for a school

Most of the students at New
Bern Hl^ school will look like
they've been run through a
ringer by Friday afternoon.
Three days of exams is enough
to make a teen ager prema
turely old, especially when the
cramming you did appeared to
be unrelated to the questions
you were called upon to an
swer.
Fifty years ago, less thanlin
7 public school teachers was a
man. By 1950 the count had
jumped to 1 In 5, and this year
it jumped to 1 in 3. Althou^
almost all male teachers are on
the high school level, an in
creasing number can be found
in the lower grades.

Local bank tellers don't have
the easiest job in the world.
There's a lot more to it than
counting money, and straining
your eyes to make sure that
counterfeit bills don't sneak
through your window.
All sorts of situations crop
up. For example, take the case
of the man who came in re
cently with a big enough wad of
currency to choke a pelican.
He Insisted he didn't want to
open a savings account, nor a
checking account.
“I just want you to keep it
for me," he explained. "When I
want it. I'll come back and get
it." Little things like that one
make a sweet young teller bite
her nails in exasperation.
And, if you envy bank em
ployees because they knock off
for more legal holidays than the
rest of us, forget it. They have
a nightmare the day after, and
work twice as hard to catch up.
