Friday, November 8, 1968 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BBRN, N. C. Page Three Buds AND Blossoms MAMIE MILLER “If ye then ...know how to give good gifts unto your chil dren; how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?" — Luke 11:13. One of the nicest border plants is lirione or lily turf. It grows 12 inches high, and is dark green with lavender spiked flowers, followed by dark, glossy green berries. These plants will grow equally well In sun and shade. Be sure to plant larkspur, delphinium and poppies this fall. Crotalaria is a soil building plant that was put out by the state as a good soil builder. Now it Is outlawed be cause the seeds are poisonous to livestock, and hard to de stroy. So if you happen to get any on your land, try to destroy it before it gets too well distri buted. Cover lautana plants this fall to prevent the cold weather from killing the roots. You may put them in pots for Indoor blooming. Cut back nandina plants at least one-thirdvof the height, if they don't have berries. The fruit is poisonous if eaten, so don’t let children play with it. Set cuttings from lever few out for next spring plants. This week. Nan Terrell Reed's "Life" is our choice for the Buds and Blossoms poem. They told me that Life could be just what I made it— Life could be fashioned and worn like a gown; I, the designer; mine the deci sion Whether towear it with bonnet , or crown. And so I selected the pretti est pattern — Life should be made of the rosiest hue— Something unique, and a bit out of fashion. One that perhaps would be chosen by few. But other folks came and lean ed o’er my shoulder; Somebody questioned the ulti mate cost; Somebody tangled the thread I was using; One day I found that my scis sors were lost. And somebody claimed the ma terial faded; Somebody said I’d be tired ere 'twas worn; Somebody’s fingers, too pointed and spiteful. Snatched at the cloth, and I saw it was torn. Oh! somebody tried to do all of the sewing, Wanting always to advise or condone. Here is my life, the product of many; Where is the gown I could fashion -- alone? Real Estate Transfers G. C.
