JONES This report to you was bas ically planned to acquaint you with Conjre.; iional Legislative activity. But since the conven ing of Congress on January 3, the legislative action has been slow to get underway. Without any implied criti- Oellglit Your Appetite with Food Cooked Right! The newCabinetSec- retaries are reluctant to make decisions until they become more familiar with their duties. In maiyin.stances, legislation is proposed by different depart ments, and, of course, being new, little if any of this type legislation has been forthcom ing. Since most major appointed positions have been filled with new personnel since January 20, this to some degree, explains the virtual stop in the legis lative processes. To anyone who ml^t have the idea that when Congress is not too busy with legislative mat ters on the House Floor, the work of the Congressional of fice comes to a stop, here are some of the activities of our of fice for the last seven days: By an accurate count, we have averaged receivlngand answer ing over 100 letters each day. Diu ing the past seven day per iod, this office has held confer ences between citizens of Dare County and officials of the National Park Service regard ing problems of the Cape Hat- teras National Seashore Park. Another conference was held in the seven day period with rep resentatives of the Greenville City School System and officials of HEW. In a vein of tragedy we were called upon to assist in funeral arrangements for a hero who was killed in Vietnam in the defense of his country. Considerable time was spent in long distance calls to South America attempting to assist another family in a personal tragedy. Thursday, March 6, I ar ranged a breakfast attended by over 50 :nembers of the House and Senate to discuss ways to combat the FCC ruling. Incidentally, this I believe was a most successful and en thusiastic meeting with the final decision being to lend :U1 efforts to the continuation of the pres- r' I I I I I I I L. Three mornings during the past seven days, my attendance was required at the Committee on Merchant Marine and Fish eries where we are consider ing the appropriations bill for the Coast Guard for the next year. Each session of these hearings began at 10:03 a.m. and usually concluded at noon. Also during the period of time we are describing, I have flown to Raleigh to address the mid winter meeting of the Tarheel Electric Membership Associa tion, and the night before the aforementioned breakfast, I flew to Murfreesboro and had the pleasure of speaking at the Exchange Club's Golden Awards NigJit. In addition to the abov.i- mentioned activities, we, of course, had the normal number of long distance calls which average 10 to 15 per day. Most of these require additional calls from this office to the various departments of government as they relate to service cases, social security, passports, copies of la vs and sometimes in!ormation from the Library of Congress. Incidentally, our office hours begin at 8:30 a. m. and usually end somewhere around 7:00p. m. with 1/2 day on Saturdays. This is not to be construed as any complaint, for this of fice is happy to be of service to any constituent at any time. On Ma.'ch 22,theannualNorth Carolina Democratic Club Ban quet and Ball will be held here in Washington. Many of you have attended this event at sometime or another and the in vitation is open to anyone in the First District who would care to attend. Annually, it has been an enjoyable occasion and one of the hlglilightsoftheCongres- sional year. I hope many of you can attend; for further information, please contact our office and we will be happy to furnish details.
