IN NEW BERN TODAY
A few of us may noi openly
admit It, but returning to school
after summer vacation is a
pleasant and exciting exper
ience. The sensation Is liable
to evaporate rather quickly,
when reality sets In, but at
first lt»s enjoyable.
Whatever you did, we hope
your summer months were
packed with pleasure. We live
in a city almost surrounded by
water, and the ocean Is only
a short drive away, so swim
ming, skiing, surfing or just
sunning, werepopularpastimes
for many of us.

Persons allergic to insect
bites should avoid perfumes,
hair sprats, and suntan lo
tions which attract insects.
Wear shoes, long trousers,
and long sleeves — avoid
flower prints that attract
bees. Keep picnic food cov
ered until the moment it is
served. Any person with a
known allergic reaction
should carry prescribed
drugs for his immediate use.
hcailh IS precious ...
ici us help protect yours
friends who graduated, and have
now gone to college or have
found employment here or else
where. If some of them are
homesick, temporarily, they'll
appreciate hearing from you.
As usual, we nave a new col
lection of freshmen with us.
Some of them look frightened
and slightly befuddled, butafew
act like they've grown accus
tomed to Hl^ school life al
ready.
If you're a freshman, just
remember that everybody on
the campus, including dignified
seniors, was a freshman once,
and just as self conscious as you
are. Be considerate of others,
and you'll be liked and respect
ed.
In fact, freshmen have some
thing on upper classmen, be
cause they can look forward to
four years of happy and pro
ductive Hi^ school activity.
At this point, you can do what
you will with your entire High
school career.
Upper classmen aren't that
fortunate. They still have one,
two or three years to achlve
scholastically, but for better
or worse, the previous years
can't be changed.
Getting an education Is ser
ious business, and if you rec
ognize this right from the start,
you'll have no regrets. You
will still have time to partic
ipate in other school activities,
and of course you should.

about the things you put down
on paper, you're going to reach
somebody somewhere. Disa

say. That's a healthy sign you
have got a mind of your own,
but never doubt we believe what
we write.
In the case of the editorial
Superintendent Mayo quoted to
those 400 school teachers, we
honestly thought, before It went
into print, that it was a fairly
good piece of writing. Why,and
we'll never know, don't we do
that kind of writing more often?
