Nrui 1Bnn-(ttrat»nt (Haumn |iublu iluutuijj The NEW BERN I PUBLISHED WCIKLV ’ IN THE HEART OP I VOLUME 12 NEW BERN, N. C., FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1969 NUMBER 26 We heartily agree with Bob Baker, who handles public relations for the Belk store here, in his high regard for New Bern’s Pilot Club. These business and professional women, 27 in number, have demonstrated that you don’t have to be the biggest organi zation in town to wield great Influence for good. Membership is restricted to two in each occupational cate gory, but there’s nothing re stricted about the group’s goals, and more importantly, its accomplishments. The only fault we find with the club is failure to blow its own horn as loudly as it should. Modesty is commendable, but we’re inclined to think that these Pilot gals ou^t to take heed of the Biblical admonition against hiding your light under a bushel. Even so, they’ve kind led so much illumination in the community that the heaviest fog couldn’t hide it. Baker was guest' speaker Monday night, at the club’s monthly meeting. A stickler for facts he did considerable research on the organization’s aims and local achievements, so he wouldn’t be at a loss for words (imagine that) when he got on his feet. He learned so much that his planned theme of presenting a favorable image throu^ un selfish consideration for others melted away somewhat into an outright hymn of praise. A dis cerning guy. Bob realized that the members were already do ing, in many respects, what he intended advocating. In the past, and in the fu ture, Pilot activities include sponsoring two girls for the Salvation Army’s summer camp, birthday cards to all pa tients at the Williams-West and Neuse Forest Convalescent Homes, and assistance to the Mental Health Association’s program for “stay at home” children. They And joy In Operation Santa Claus, sending gifts to Cherry hospital and Caswell Center, are keenly interested ill the New Eyes for the Needy project, provide club scholar ships for deserving students, contribute to CARE, investigate blind corners in the interest of safety and notify City Hall of their findings. In turn, they have pledged to work with the New Bern police department in the promotion of bicycle safety. Further proof that the Pilot club is no place for the lazy to find a setting for idleness are plans for spon.soring one performance of “Androcles And The Lion” by the Dixie Theatre of Greensboro, and an Easter Party for children at the Day Care Center. The club will make a con- tiibutiuii this year to the local department of public welfare, to provide gifts for children in boarding homes who are not re membered with presents from their own families. It will make a contribution to the Mental Health Center for equipment. Pilot members aren’t a- shamed of being patriotic. Ac- tivlUes for the year include a Buy A Flag, Fly a Flag pro motion in the community, and spon.soring of a Patriotic Post er contest in the fifth and (’Continued on page 8; RnrrA^inn Jo^es, and Ike Riggs.
