Those of you who are plan
ning to be secretaries need to
know more than how to type
and take dictation. Quite im
portant will be the way you an
swer the telephone.
Pick a dozen New Bern of
fices at random, and place a
call. More often than not, If
the boss Is out, the secretary
will simply state this fact and
let It go at that. Apparently, the
sooner you hang up, the better
she’ll like It.
What a really efficient secre
tary does Is let you know when
her employer Is expected back.
Also, she will make an effort to
get your name and telephone
number, so she can relay the In
formation when the boss re
turned.
It won’t be much help to your
employer, when you have noth

ing to report except "some man
called you.” It could be that
the call was unimportant, but
how will he know for sure?
Here’s something interest
ing. Seven English younsters
in their early teens have in
vented a new detergent that is
described as “whiter - than
white.” They’ve named the
product Wsik because “it
whacks all the other brands
on the market.” The oldest
members of the group are just
14 years old.
Before very long our
eastern North Carolina
teenagers will be enjoying wa-
ter sports again on our rivers
and creeks, and at the nearby
ocean. Promise yourself that,
for your own sake and the sake
of others, you will observe
safety rules.
It isn’t the frightened nov
ice who Is usually involved
in tragedy, but the experienced
young person who lets con
fidence lead him into care
less and reckless behav
ior. Don’t allow this to happen
to you.
Never go boating when wea
ther reports advise against It.
NavigaUon authorities don’t
want to spoil your fun, they
just want you to stay alive.
If, in their opinion there’s too
much wind and the water is
too rough, you’d better believe
them.

tally, it was in Kilmarnock

great fire of December 1,
1922, started in a defective
flue at a frame dwelling.
Chattawka Lane originated
in recent years from Chattaw
ka, or Chattooka, the In
dian name site of New
Bern. This was a mispelling
of chautaqua, a Seneca word
meaning “where the fish was
tkane out.” The Seneca Indians
in New York were on intimate
terms with the Indian in this
secton.

Restoration, was named for
Charles Eden, Governor of
North Carolina Province from
May 28, 1714, to March 26,
1722. Metcalf Street, also run
ning along the Tryon Palace
Wall, was so designated to
honor Caleb Metcalf, a resi
dent merchant of the town when
it was laid out.
New Street and PleetStreet
were named for streets in Lon
don. End Street, now First
street, was given the designa
tion because it was the western
boundary when New Bern was
first established. North Avenue
was the northern boundary.
