Page Six THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, April 3, 1970 At Seen in The Mirror't SPORTS of Athletes ond Events The Mirror’s editor, while Pete Maravlch was still a High school basketball player at Ra leigh Broughton, had occasion to Interview his father. Press, on radio. Pete, of course, fig ured in the conversation. At the time. Press gave no indication that he contemplated leaving N. C. State to take the coaching job at Louisiana State University. His chief concern, or so he said, was whether it would be wise for Pete to en roll at a college where his own father would be the coach. We got the impression that the elder Maravlch held rather a dim view of this possibility. Whether he changed his think ing, or knew in his heart all along that Pistol Pete was destined to be one of his play ers, is something that may never be known. For the two, father and son, how It turned out left little cause for regret. Great though he undoubtedly Is, Pete prob ably wouldn’t have been given a free rein by some other coach, and, forced to perform more as a team man he couldn’t have scored as often. Few ball clubs can make It, If they depend too heavily on a single star. The presence of young Maravlch on the LSU team for three exciting years wasn’t enough to bring theBen- gals a Southeastern Conference crown, much less the oppor tunity to assert themselves in NCAA competition. This had to be keenly disap pointing to Pistol Pete and his father. Worse still, when LSU accepted a bid to the National Invitational In New York’s Madison Square Garden, Pete’s two performances before yielding an ailing ankle were WHAT'S IN A NAME? Trademarks are little things to look for, but big things to find. » I I I ‘if. L 2704 NEUSE BLVD. NEW BERN. N. C. f{eo/ Estate Transfers Tryon Realty Co., of New Bern, Inc., to Richard D.
