Friday, April 17, 1970 THE NEW BERN MIRROR. NEW BERN, N. C. Page -PlKe Washington Report — iy — CONGRESSMAN WALTER B. JONES Last week on Wednesday, April 8, the United States Sen ate once again refused to ap prove a Southerner for a place on the United States Supreme Court. Those who opposed the con firmation of Judge Harrold Carswell gave varying rea sons- Some of the same ones who voted against the confir mation of Judge Haynsworth in recent months at that time stat ed that Haynsworth was quali fied, butoffered other excuses. But in the Instance of Judge Carswell, the excuse of many was that he was not judically qualified. Therefore, those who are adamant against the confirmation of a Southerner will use whatever excuse they can find. An analysis of the confirma tion voted showed a lack of sup port between President Nixon and the Senate, for 13 Republi can Senators voted no in spite of White House pressure- The majority of the Southern Senators of both parties sup ported Carswell, withtheglar- Ing exceptions of Senator Sprong of Virginia and Senator Gore of Tennessee, both Demo crats; and in a major surprise. Republican Senator Cook of Kentucky voted against. Also last week in a most un usual action the Congress pass ed legislation to avert a nation wide railroad strike- In recent years resolutions have been passed by the Congress to force labor and management to fur ther negotiate; but last week, the Congressional action also Included the setting of wages as it relates to back pay and overtime- In other words, the legisla tion actually spelled out the terms of the settlement. There For economy heat with oil maximum hoof for your money ^fo cO^ hres Oil C«. 506 Cypress ME 7-2197 were four unions Involved In this dispute, and three of the unions had overwhelmingly agreed to the settlement offer ed by the railroads, while the smaller imlon, the Sheetmetal Workers, by an extremely close vote, rejected the offer. In spite of the Congressional action in settling the 17-month old dispute, the present con tract expires at the end of this year and negotiations on the new contract will begin sometime next fall. I hope that this does not set a precedent where each labor dispute will reach the halls of Congress. It seems logical that labor and management in this sophisticated age should be able to devise a mutal plan for avoid ing costly and crippling strikes. In the confusion of our pres ent affluent society, we some times overlook or forget organ izations which are making a a great contribution to the sta bility of this and future gener ations. Such an organization is the Future Homemakers of America, who last week cele brated their 25th anniver sary. lliis is a national organiza tion where home economics students in junior and senior high schools assemble through out the nation. It has a national member ship of 604,000 in 12,000 high schools. North Carolina has 29,665 FHA members in 459 chapters. This office salutes the leaders and their member ships.
