Few could have been
surprised when Mike McGee
was chosen as the successor to
Tom Harp as Duke’s gridiron
coach. Once it was decided to
give Harp the axe, Mike had the
inside track.
Best remembered in New
Bern as a great High school
lineman for the Elizabeth City
Yellow Jackets, he is fondly
recalled at Duke as an All-
American who later played pro
ball until injuries put him on the
shelf.
McGee had a rather
unspectacular first season as a
lOOOOOOOOeOOOOOBOOOpi
college coach. Perhaps too
much was expected when he
took over the reins at East
Carolina University. At any
rate, his 1970 Pirates fared
rather badly.
He will be operating in a
much faster league in the
Atlantic Coast Conference, but
is inheriting some pretty fair
talent. Included on his varsity
roster next season will be New
Bern’s Chuck Mohn.
Chuck is no stranger to Mike.
Eager to quickly build a power
at the Greenville institution,

from New Bern High.
Harp, anxious to find a
capable replacement for his
stellar quarterback, Kinston’s

career concluded this year, was
quite pleased when Cliuck
accepted a grant in aid.
If you saw Wide World of
Sports on television last
Saturday, you’ll no doubt agree
that Cassius Clay in his latest
fight didn’t resemble the
Cassius Clay of old. The match
was as dull as a third rate
preliminary bout.
Understandably, other
schools in the Atlantic Coast
Conference have resented to
manner in which South Carolina
and Clemson pressured them to
adopt lower scholastic
standards for enrolling athletes.
It has been our sentiment to
let the Gamecocks and Tigers
drop out of the ACC rather Sian
submit to their bulldozing
tactics. They’ll discover soon
enough that the role of an
independent team is no bed of
roses, and not necessarily a
gold mine.

What you pay for a Christ
mas gift is naturally something
to consider, but what you get
for what you pay is equally
important.
Our patronage, through the
years, has been built on the
firm belief that it is unwise,
and unfair to customers, to offer
inferior merchandise at any
price.
That's why, each Holiday
Season, shoppers turn to us to
provide them with gifts in fash

ever the price range desired
may be.
And we might add, we
specialize in bringing befuddled
males out of their bewilderment
when they have a gift prob
