Page Two THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, June 4, 1971 Washington Report — By — CONGRESSMAN WALTER B. JONES One evening last week, the Women’s Press Corps of Washineton, D. C. held their annual event in which they honored an outstanding woman. On this occasion, the honoree was Martha Mitchell, the wife of Attorney General John Mitchell, whose name has become almost a household word. Among the guests invited BEASLEY-Kl^^ MMMOM - MAlTOtl '’SgRVICE - SAVINOS" 310 Broad Stroot—637-2131 Auto Radiators Claaned, Roddod and Ropairad We remove and replace B & R Radiator Shop BRIDGETON ME 7-4504 For economy heat with oil maximum heat for your money was J. Edgar Hoover, Director of the F. B. I. This was his first public appearance in almost four years, and in spite of the criticism that has been directed towards him and his Depart ment, he received a standing ovation when he was introduced for his brief remarks, and another long ovation when he concluded; indicating that a sometimes hostile press still appreciates the job that he has done. His alertness and physical appearance in no way supports some of the criticism regarding his capability at the present time. In the way of legislation was a resolution to authorize a trip into several foreign countries by the Post Office and Civil Service Committe to investiagte postal conditions. I felt com pelled to vote against this inasmuch as the Congress no longer has any jurisdiction over the Post Office Department, and I could see no justification for this trip. The most controversial matter before the House was an attempt to defeat the Reorganization Plan which President Nixon submitted to combine VISTA and the Peace Corps. On this issue I supported the President, and if the Senate agrees, then the merger of these two agencies will be completed, giving more direction and supervision than they have experienced in the past. Also, unsuccessful efforts were made to create a Select Committee in the Congress on Energy Resources. The purpose of creating this Committee was to study the very serious problem of a growing shortage of electricity as well as the basic ingredients used in generating power. The final vote was 128 for the bill, with 218 against. Congress recessed for the Memorial Day holiday oh Thursday, May 27, until Tuesday, June 1.
