Don’t get the idea that you’ll
just be making a donation to a
very worthy cause. The candy is
of excellent quality. If your
parents are the exception, and
don’t read this column, mention
this drive for funds to them.
It’s that time again. New
Bern High school’s Junior
Civitans are on the prowl,
peddling trick or treat candy for
Halloween. You and your
family will purchase a pay off
for the young goblins and
witches who are going to knock
on your door. Let the Junior
Civitans supply you.
Unless you patronize your
school’s various ventures, you
have no right to expect support
from those who are not mem
bers of the student body. In
terest is contagious. Your en
thusiasm will spread to others.
If you’re interested in

BREAKING THE ICE . . . Lockheed Shipbuilding and Con
struction Co., of Seattle, Wash., will build what is described as
the world’s most powerful icebreaker for the U.S. Coast Guard
under a J52,681,485 contract. The 400-foot, 12,000-ton vessel,
shown in an artist’s rendering, will be the first addition to the
U.S. icebreaking fleet since 1954. The yet unnamed ship is ex
pected to be in operation by 1974.
evening sky during most of
October.
They aren’t easily seen,
which is a good reason to save
money from your allowance and
eventually buy a telescope.
Mars, the next goal of our
astronauts, is that very bright
star you see in the south at dusk.
It doesn’t set until around
midnight. Venus and Jupiter,
not nearly as easy to spot, are
low in the southwestern sky at
twilight. Unlike lingering Mars,
they set after about an hour.
To differentiate between
Venus and Jupiter, the former
is the brighter of the two, and is
to the left (west) of Jupiter.
Saturn rises in the early
evening, and stays around until
just before dawn. Mercury, fifth
of the planets visible during
October evening, is hard to see
as November approaches.
Although astronomy is an
ancient science, it is still in its
infancy. Developing it now as a
hobby, while you’re in your
teens, may lead to a career in
thisfleld. As the song says, this
is the age of Aquarius.

You didn’t get the big-name
vocalists and instrumentalists
on these cheaper recordings,
but one gal, Lee Morse, who
sang sentimental ballards
compared favorably with Ruth
Etting. There could be no higher
compliment.
Yesterday was when
politicians running for State
office always promised that
folks in eastern North Carolina
could count on getting good
highways like the ones in the
Piedmont section and further
west.
Through the years, the
promises have continued
unabated. Skipper Bowles, first
of the candidates for North
Carolina governor to officially
announce, lost little time in
presenting the same threadbare
pitch.
Lest you think we are bad
mouthing Bowles in particular,
we hasten to predict that all of
his opponents will join him in
repeating the same old pledge
of equal treatment when it
comes to good roads.
With all due respect to Bowles
and the chorus that will join him
when all candidates announce,
this is to inform them that the
notes of the song are far past
being mellow. To be specific,
the tune has turned sour.
For our part, we will remain
unimpressed by its rendition, no
matter who does the warbling,
until something more concrete
than oratory is provided for
citizens who dwell in the
forgotten region east of
Raleigh.
