P-ige Six THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN. N. C. As Seen in The Mirror's SPORTS of Athletes ond Events With 26 seniors on the squad, Havelock knew that winning the Eastern 2-A crown was a now or perhaps never proposition. Defeating Elizabeth City’s Northeastern 20-6 for the title finally made believers out of all fans. There is little doubt the Rams were not only the best of the 3-A crop, but capable of trouncing a number of 4-A teams that were spared the ordeal of facing them. On the college scene, the importance of sustained ball possession was strikingly demonstrated in last Saturday’s Alabama-Aubrun game. Coaches everywhere stress it, and the Crimson Tide made the most of it. Clemson’s victory over South Carolina’s Gamecocks pleased Mme of us immensely, and not just because a New Bern boy, Jeff Stocks, played defensive end for the rebuilding Tigers. Pulling out from the Atlantic Coast Conference in the manner that it did wasn’t the worst of thing to endear South Carolina up this way. TTie picture could change, but Maryland and the UNC Tar Heels appear to have too much talent to be defeated often this season by other Atlantic Coast quints. Both, as you know, are ranked high nationally. Not only N. C. State grldders, but quite a few other folks, were disappointed when A1 Michaels was passed over as a per manent replacement for Earl Edwards as Wolfpack coach. Michaels didn’t inherit a surplus of talent from Edwards, but all aspects considered, achieved enough progress in a single season to deserve a second chance. One of the things that possibly hurt ATs continuance as head coach is his image as a recruiter. Michaels by nature isn’t a charmer who can go out and paint a glowing picture to an athlete sought by numerous schools. Ball games aren’t won on the field of battle half as often as they are on the talent trail. Land the big ones, and you’re off and running. Miss out and you’re in for trouble.
