Mistletoe is a plant that has earned the name of thief, as it grows on trees and draws water and minerals from them. It is a perfect parasite. Some kinds of birds especially like the white berries that the mistletoe produces. They eat the juicy part of the beny. Then they dean their beak off m the bark of the tree. A. it can grow so profusely that the tree it clings to is almost ob- scired. In nature, animals and in sects act as partners. They aren’t parasites like the mistletoe. Bees help clover by caring the pollen from flower to flower, and bees produce honey. Roses, lilies-of-the-valley, violets, and many other flowers are very fragrant. I^e sweet smell comes from the special oil in them. The perfume makers get the oil from the flowers, and add a waxy substance from whales, musk deer, or beaver. Alcohol must always be added. It takes a ton of rose petals to make a pound of rose oU. Today lots of the perfume comes from coal tar, and new fragrances have been produced from this source. Perfume has been made for thousands of years. It has b^n found in ancient tombs of Egypt, and Columbus brought it to America.
