Everett Jordan, who was defeated by Nick in the Democratic Primary, first gained prominence 25 years ago, in the Coastal Plain League. He had just finished a hitch in the Navy, and had landed a job at a R(»noke Rapids radio station. When a vacancy oc curred in the Coastal Plain, he launched a vigorous campaign to see that Roanoke Rapids was the replacement. It was a tough undertaking. Helms was pretty emotional about the whole thing. To such an extent that at one league meeting, when the circuit’s directors temporarily frowned on the Roanoke Rapids ap plication, he broke down and wept. Later, Coastal Plain officials had a change of heart, and the Roanoke Jays came into being. Everybody in town pitched in to get a ball park ready, and the final boards for the grandstand were nailed just hours before the opening game. It’s up to North Carolina’s voters to decide whether Helms is qualified to serve in the U. S. Senate, and a better man than Galifianakis. But whatever his ability, his dogged deter mination was established long ago.
