spring planting needs.
Examine your own li
brary and check on any
new books that you would
like to add. Visit your
public library and
examine their stock of
garden books. Don’t
neglect the older books
because there is a wealth
of good reading in many
of them.
If you are not sub
scribing to one or more
gardening magazines,
you might want to look
around for a good one.
It should have ideas to
help you in planning and
planting.
If you have house
plants with large,
smooths leaves, philo-
d endrons, drac aenas,
palms, rubber plants,
fatshedera and other
similar plants, you may
wish to improve the
appearance of the leaves.
You can do this by wsish-
ing the leaves on both
sides with a sponge
dipped in soapy water and
squeezed out.
Plan your vegetable
garden on paper. This
is a real good idea
because you can have the
variety you want and the
quantity of each vegetable
that you need to supply
the family table. Visit
your coimty extension
office and ask for a copy
of “Garden Manual.” If
he does not have one or

Prune fruit trees,
bunch grapes, and
deciduous and evergreen
shrubs except the early
flowering shrubs such as
forsythla and splrea.
Wait until after they
bloom in the spring. The
fruit trees and grape
vines should be pruned
every year. The shrubs
as needed. Muscadine
vines should have been
pruned in late November
or in December. How
ever, if you have not
already done your
pnmlng, I would do this
job as soon as possible.
Keep fall planted
trees and shrubs well
supplied with water
when the groimd supply
of water gets low. This
is very Important If you
expect survival and
satisfactory growth of
your plants. No matter
how cold the weather
gets, keep them watered
except when the ground
Is frozen.
Have your garden soil
tested with special
