Friday, January 12, 1973 As Seen in The Mirror's SPORTS -r\0^iS Mirror Morsels of Athletes and Events Don Shula and George Allen are quite adept at locker-room oratory, but their ball clubs won’t need pep talks prior to Sunday’s Super Bowl battle. Dangerous because even pro athletes are inclined to be erratic, when they are tense and overly eager. It could easily prove to be a contest of numerous fumbles and frequent penalties. Let’s hope the op posite occurs. For many of the Washington Redskins, there may not be a second time around. Father Time is relentlessly herding them toward the sidelines. ’This now or never aspect has to have sentimentalists pulling for them. Youth must be served, and decidedly so in the realm of sports, but a special nobility cloaks the shoulders of those who thumb their nose at ad vancing years and go down fighting. Senior citizens have much in common with the Redskins. What complicates the matter is the admiration you have to feel for the Miami Dolphins and their thoroughly decent coach. In the event Washington wins, a fan will be sadistic not to feel a little sorry for Shula’s outfit. Leo Durocher, who har^y measures up to our image of a genuine gentleman, has always taken the position that good guys finish last. Vice incapacitates a man from all public duty; it withers the powers of his un derstanding, and makes his mind paralytic.—Burke. In this world of resemblances, we are content with personating happiness; to feel it is an art beyond us.—Mackenzie. Nothing is more unworthy of a wise man, or ought to trouble him more, than to have allowed more time for trifling, and useless things, than they deserved.—Plato. ’Titles of honor are like the impressions on coin, which add no value to gold or silver, but only render Brass current.— Sterne. ’The man who threatens the world is always ridiculous; for the world can easily go on without him, and, in a short time will cease to miss him.— Samuel Johnson. Thought is deeper than speech; feeling deeper than thought; souls to souls can never teach what to themselves was taught.—Cranch. He is a fool who thinks by force or skill to turn the current of a woman’s will.—Samuel ’Tuke. Less Judgment than wit is more sail than ballast. Yet it inust be confessed, that wit gives an edge to sense, and recommends it extremely.— William Penn. Be thou the rainbow to the storms of life; the evening beam that smiles the clouds away, and tints tomorrow with proi^etic ray.—Lord Byron. Wealth, after all, is a relative thing, since he that has little, and wants less, is richer than he that has much, and wants more.—Caleb C. Colton. one must admit that some pretty crummy characters do reach the top of the ladder. All the decency in the world can’t make up for a lack of brawn, speed and muscular coordination. With enough of it, a guy who in all other respects is a bum can achieve stardom and maintain it. Such athletes excel, however, not because they are bad guys, but in spite of being bad guys. The truly great in our book are fellows like Walter Johnson, Christy Matthewson, Joe Dimaggio, and certainly Joe Louis. ’There’ll be a whole lot of good guys going at each other in the Si^r Bowl game. One of them will be 36 year old Jack Pardee, a Redskin linebacker who anchors his team’s rugged defense. “If you have heart,” says Jack,” and take care of yourself spiritually and physically, you can go on a lot longer than people think.” The vows that woman makes to her fond lover are only fit to be written on air, or on the swiftyly passing stream.— Catullus. It is difficult to divest one’s self of vanity; because im possible to divest one’s self of self-love.—Horace Walpole. We cannot control the evil tongues of others, but a good life enables us to disregard them.— Cato. In matters of conscience first thoughts are best; in matters of prudence last thoughts are best.—Robert Hall. God has two dwellings; one in Heaven, and the other in a meek and thanksful heart.—Izaak Walton. He who forgets his own friends meanly to follow after those of higher degree is a snob.—William Thackeray. There is no royal road to anything. One thing at a time, and all things in succession. That which grows slowly en dures.—J. G. Holland. I do love my country’s good with a respect more tender, more holy and profound than mine own life.-^hakespeare. A patient, humble temper gathers blessings that are marred by the peevish, and overlooked by the aspiring.—E. H. Chapin. Soine are so very studious of learning what was done by the ancients, that they know not how to live with the moderns.— William Penn. The merit of originality is not novelty, it is sincerity.
