Page Eight THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, January 12, 1973 TEEN Topics IN NEW BERN TODAY Maybe it just seemed that way, but there appeared to be less teen agers than usual roaming around in the snow this week. Evidently, many young motorists heeded warnings, and stayed off treacherous roads and streets. However, falling flakes, because they descend so seldom on our town, fascinate New Bemians of all ages. Adults, especially the elderly, do have W. C. Because snow is a rarity here, the city is not well equipped to clear streets in the manner that it is done in places that are annually subjected to the stuff several times, and for long periods. Even if we could have lots of snow, we don’t have hills that would be ideal for sledding. Owning a sled in New Bern is about as pointless as owning a pair of ice skates, unless you go elsewhere to use them. Some New Bernians are fortunate in this respect, to- cluding several local teen agers who attend Episcopal High School at Alexandria, Virginia. They have a large pond right on the campus for ice skating in winter. One of our NBHS graduates. Nelson McDaniel, is a member of the faculty. He takes groups of EHS students to various northern ski spots on weekends, and has taken some of the groups to the French Alps several times. Such a trip is planned for March during the semester break, with about 20 boys, in cluding possibly some from New Bern, making the trip. Mr. McDaniel took up skiing him self, while attending the University of Lyon in France, as a University of North Carolina student. In recent years, a number of ski resorts have been developed in the mountains of North YOU'LL PROBABLY FIND IT AT Askew’s, Inc. Of course, it was not a moment for rational thinking. Ironically, when Booth, an actor who was not appearli^ in the play, leaped to the stage after shooting Lincoln through a hole at the rear of the Presidential box, his spur caught in the folds of the American flag. His leg was broken as he fell, but he limped across the stage, brandishing a dagger and shouting, “Sic semper tyran- nis.’’ In English it means “Thus ever to tyrants.’’ ’The actor was later tracked down and killed in Virginia. However, not before he managed to reach a doctor. Tho^ is a spurred boot in the museum, sliced open down the shin, so that the physician could examine and set the assassin’s fractured underpinion. When Booth himself was slain, it left many questions unanswered, as was the case when John F. Kennedy’s killer, Lee Oswald, suddenly departed this life. Both men might have talked, had they remained alive. Six alleged conspirators, one Carolina, and several New Bemians go there from time to time to enjoy the sport. Snow machines manufacture snow there, if necessary. Even ski resorts in northern states can’t always count on honest to goodness snow. Much of their business comes during the Christmas holidays, and unseasonably mild weather has been disastrous for them in some years recently. Snow in New Bern has its limitations, but it can still be loads of fun if you’re in the right frame of mind. Consumer TV Fare Is Planned RALEIGH — A new television series dealing with consumer issues will be launched by the North Carolina Agricul tural Extension Service on Jan. 8. In the aforementioned museum there’s a large photograph of their hooded bodies suspended on ropes. Later developments cast some doubt on the guilt of the woman, and at this point in history it is still debatable whether others unpunished were involved. YOU'LL FIND YOUR TOP TUNES AT . . .
