After years, it still seems a miracle. Back in the fall of 1937, Hinson was a back on the Appalachian College football team. The Catawba College game was one that Earl and his teammates pointed for, and when the morning prior to the contest rolled around, he confided in a sports writer. “I had a dream last night,” he said, ‘‘And it was about this afternoon’s game. I dreamed the score was nothing to nothing, right iq> to the very last play the very last quarter. And then I scored the winning touchdown.” Hinson described the play, and the sports writer jott^ down the information. In fact, he even went so far as to write an advance story about the game’s outcome, and stuck it in his desk. The game turned out to be bitter battle that everyone had predicted. Neither team could score. With less than a minute to play, Appalachian was on its own goal line, and fourth down was coming up. Hinson dropped back into the end zone, in punt formation. He faked the kick, and started running. Somehow or other, he W. Z. Fields and wife, Sara Harrell Fields, to Norman N. Mills and wife, Helen S. Mills. Property in No. 6 Township. Kenneth E. Treasure Cove of the Atlantic, managed to get by the line of scrimmage, and up the field he went. Defensive players seem to freeze in their tracks. The game-ending gun went off, but a play was in motion, so Earl just kept on going. He had to cover more than a hundred yards to reach his destinaticHi, but he did it, and Appalachian won, six to nothing. Unbelievable though it may seem, mnson nad scared the game’s only touchdown, in the exact manner that his dream of the previous night indicated. The sports writer’s notes and story confirmed it. And here’s a final interesting sidelight. Leo Morgan, former New Bern High school coach—a freshman member of the Catawba squad—was watching from the bench, when this strange sports miracle oc curred.
