Cannas play an important part in giving a garden a good background. The foliage is always beautiful, and very healthy. They bloom from July to heavy frost. Cannas come in all colors. They may be used in borders, as accent plants, and make good screening. Plant plenty of coleus seed indoors, to use in borders when the danger of frost is over. Coleus Oriental Splendor, Coleus Rainbow Fringed Leaved, and Coleus Brilliant will give you beautiful colors. You may also have plenty of plants to give to friends and family. Share with us this week’s Buds and Blossoms poem from the pen of Sara Teasdale. She titled it Solitary. My heart has grown rich with the passing of years, I have less ne^ now than when I was young To share mys^ with every comer Or shape my thoughts into words with my tongue. *• -r- It is one to me that they come or go If I have myself and the drive of my will. And strength to climb on a summer’s night And watch the stars swarm over the hill. Let them think I love them more than I do. Let them think I care, though I go alone; If it lifts their pride, what is it to me Who am self-complete as a flower or a stone. By JANICE CHRISTENSEN This is the age of evolution and revolution for everything, including house furnishings. So a Davidson County homemaker decided to. use the same fabric for three quite different purposes. First, Mrs. Paul Huffman, Winston-Salem, Rt. 9, selected a beautiful heavy fabric for dra peries. Then she decided she needed a long skirt for evening wear, so she artistically designed a skirt from fabric remnants. Later on Mrs. Huff man refashioned the skirt into two accent pillows and a footstool covering. Textiles are exciting to any homemaker who is creative enough to use one piece of fabric three ways, believes Mrs. Jane Ebert, home economics extension agent. RIGHT SMART A Columbus County homemaker, who had sewn for 40 years, decided to attend noon hour clothing construc tion classes for working girls. During the classes the lady asked a lot of ques tions and was often advised to check her pattern guide sheet, for the answers to her specific problem. At the end of the last mini-class the home maker told everyone that the people who wrote the pattern guides really did know what they were doing and were right smart after all, espe cially when her methods failed and theirs worked. She’s decided that the safest way to make a garment is to follow the pattern sheet, confirms Ann Bobo, assistant home economics extension agent and mini-class instructor.
