Page Six THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, February 23, 1973 At Seen in The Mirror's of Athletes and Events New Bernians who saw Charlie Scott star for UNC in Atlantic Coast competition realized he was no ordinary college basketballer. However, it is doubtful that anyone ex pected him to quickly rise to the heights as a pro. Scott is up there, more than holding his own with the best of them, as a sensational guard for the Phoenix Suns. What put him in orbit, after moving from the ABA to the NBA, was learning to go to his. right. Word got around, when the former Tar Heel performed for the Virginia Squires, that you could stop him, or slow him down, by making it difficult to move to his left. Don Chaney of the Boston Cletics, who does as good a job guarding Scott as anyone in the NBA, says, "If you try to overplay him to his strong side, he either goes back door on you or lays the ball off to a team mate.” There are a few guys in the business who are so strong offensively that they have to be played straight away. Chaney, a defense specialist, admits he can’t go up in the air the way Charlie does. "If he were a pro quar terback," Don speculates, "you’d be reading about what a quick release he has on pass plays. That’s the way he shoots, quick before anybody can set up against him.” Coach Jerry COlangelo of the Suns believes that Scott, if he continues to knprove, is destined to be the greatest guard who ever played pro basketball. Phoenix has built its entire offense around him. Charlie still has a lot to learn especially on defense. At times he can be run into a pick, and he frequently lets the man he is guarding get too far away from him. Experience will remedy this. The strategy used by other ball clubs against Scott is, of course, to keep the ball away from him. However, he moves well enough without the ball to create openings for himself inside. Sophomore David Thompson is doing the same thing for N. C. State this year. Wiich is why every pro team in the country wants him. Rea! Estate Transfers J. Frank Efird and wife, Margaret M. State University This may be a good time to answer a backlog of questions. “About every three years we have trouble with stoppage in our sewer line. Do some trees clog lines worse than others?’ Perhaps elms, wil lows and poplars are the worst offenders but oaks and others will also clog lines. Certain chemicals may be used to keep lines open but most of us wait until the line clogs and call a plumber. Then we forget about it imtil the line clogs again. If yov are building a new home, have your contractor Install a line which will prevent the entry of roots as they search for moisture. “We hear much about the Importance of light in growing house plants and how the light supply varies n different homes. Is a sun lamp of any value in supplying the plant needs for light?’ The sun lamp is designed to tsn your hide and not your flowers, as it produces a high per centage of ultra-violet (short wave) light. It is best • to use ordinary Incandescent bulbs. “How much commer cial fertilizer should I use on my house plants?’ While this question is difficult to answer with any degree of accuracy, you might use these figures as guidelines: using 8-8-8 as a basis, add one level teaspoonful to a six-inch pot; one level tablespoonful to an eight-inch pot; and about one-third teaspoonful to a four-inch pot. For special formula tions (tablets, liquid or granular) carefully fol low the manufacturers’ r ecommendatlons. “How can I tell whether or not my house plants need to be re potted in a larger container?’ Spread the fingers of one hand firmly on top of the soil in the pot. With the other hand, turn the pot upside down. Tap the rim of the pot gently until the ball slips out. If the roots have formed a thick solid mass on the outside of the ball of soil, the plant should be re-potted in a larger container. While we are on the subject of house plants. I remind you again that over-watering is the most common cause of failure of potted house plants to grow well. Water the plants thor oughly and then wait until the soil feels dry to touch before watering again. “How do plants climb?’ Some of the more common methods are these: bittersweet, grape and clematis have cling ing tendrils; honeysuckle and wisteria are twining; Boston ivy and Virginia creeper have adhesive discs; and euonymus, Scott TILE CO.
